Because it is corrupt.

You have to look at that in a couple different ways.

1. There are more Christians than anything in the world. It is statistically inferred, then, that more atheists would have been Christians before choosing atheism.
2. In order to disbelieve in a God, you have to have focused on the concept of a God, which is only present in a certain group of religions. So, to turn away from God, you would have had to have followed one of those religions to begin with. The largest being Christianity, it can again be inferred that more atheists would have been Christians.

3. You also have to think about the Atheists who never followed a religion to begin with, but since you specifically asked about those who "descend" from a religion, we can leave those out here.

4. The word "descend" insinuates that they are going from something higher to something lower. I do not believe that is an accurate assumption.

Yes, because Christianity is the most prominent religion in the most advanced and well-educated countries. These countries provide more freedom of speech and action. Therefore people read The Holy Bible, and some of them realize that it has way too much contradictions and bad advice too be considered the work of an omniscient god and they realize that even the concept of an omniscient, all-powerful God is ridiculous when you think about. And if they are not afraid to express their beliefs they will become Atheists. Thus there are much more Atheists descending from Christianity than any other religion.

definitely yes, since christianity is the largest religion on the planet (or is it islam...) but anyways its large and so chances are the atheists are going to be descendants of christians.

i am pretty sure that there are quite a lot of jewish atheists also. but certainly its impossible for them to number as high as former christian atheists since there are only 15 million people in the world who identify with judaism, believers or not.

"A thorough reading and understanding of the Bible is the surest path to atheism” ~ Donald Morgan

by the way, its probably just the opposite, people who read the bible without all of the stigma that christianity has attached to it may not BELIEVE any more, but they would probably respect it a lot more

unfortunately in the past 2000 years the bible has come to be equated with bad things - hell, eternal torment, punishment, vengeance, sin, and guilt - but it was never intended to be equated with these things

I think that such is the case. To be a good atheist , first you must be a good Christian. The reason is that Christianity is (perhaps) the only religion that sees God in relational terms because it insists in giving God the status of a person. Relationships also involve denial, questioning, and because God is a person and a creator, therefore there's a concrete reality out there that can be probed, inquired about, examined because the reality is not God. Christianity is a questioning religion. No wonder it begets atheists.

I think don't think that Atheists become that way because of Christianity. It is just that traditionally Christianity is more widely taught in the US than other things. In Asia there are many Atheists but they certainly have no connection to Christianity. People are always looking for someone, or something to blame!

Yes & no.

Yes in the sense that Christians **CANNOT** be atheists. Therefore, those who were brought up in the Christian faith & then decided that they did not believe in God, no longer identify with the Christian religion.

However, not all religions require their adherants to worship the God/gods of the particular religion. For example, Judaism & Buddhism. People who have been raised Jewish & decide they don't believe in God still identify with the Jewish religion. Likewise, Buddhism, which is polytheistic religion, does not require its adherants to be in the numerous deities of Buddhism.

Yes, There is a reason for this.

The first 8 years of childhood are the years in which we are conditioned more than any other. As children most of us must come to grips with the fact that our parents, who we trusted, lied to us. They told us a fat man in a red suit would come to us in the dead of winter and deliver toys. Other lies may have included the tooth fairy, the Easter bunny and others. This conditioning is ideal for pushing people into atheism and secular scepticism, the implication being that the parent's religion may simply be an extension of the falsehoods.

Yes, and I'm not surprised. Christianity points out to people that they are not good enough and they need God. People believe that they are good enough and the only thing they need God for is to open the gates of Heaven for them when they arrive.
Is it any wonder that that they give up on Christianity when God says to be humble and submit yourselves to God. To beg for forgiveness and admit that you can't save yourself. To live the life God has for you and not the life you have for yourself. How many of the ego-centric, self-involved, proud, and self aggrandizing present generation would say "It's all about God! What does He think?" instead of "It's all about me! What do I think?"?
II Timothy 4:3&4 says "For the time will come when men will not put up with sound doctrine. Instead, to suit their own desires, they will gather around them a great number of teachers to say what their itching ears want to hear. They will turn their ears away from the truth and turn aside to myths." I think that that time is here now, and in spades.

Maybe. And this may be because people lose faith in Christian leaders or professed adherents. Or maybe they think God has failed them at some point or the other. Again we're probably throwing away the baby with the bath water. God say that as many as seek Him will find Him- if you seek earnestly. It is amazing that we expect to find a god we can control or manipulate to satisfy all our wants. If we would take the time to read the bible, we'd discover so much more.

No, atheism stems from a desire to not be accountable for one's actions, by believing that there is no God who defines a definite moral code, so it doesn't really matter what you do in life because there is nothing but sleep in death.

I have indeed seen some atheists who have forsaken the God of their youth for that same lack of accountability.

I have also seen PLENTY of Christians whose parents and entire families were very outspoken athesists, yes, those same atheists who talk about how wonderful they are without needing God who also then disown their children for claiming God.

And it's those same atheists who talk about how accepting they are of everyone else, unlike those nasty Christians, but who HATE Christians with such a fervor that they sue in court to have the rights of Christians stripped away, as if Christians aren't entitled to the same rights as Mormons, JWs, Muslims, even atheists. It's happening today in every state of this country.
