Scabies is a contagious (catching) disorder of the skin caused by very small, wingless insects or mites called the Human Itch mite or Scabies itch mite Sarcoptes scabiei var. hominis (Hering). The female insect burrows into the skin where she lays 1 - 3 eggs daily. A very small, hard to see, zigzag blister usually marks the trail of the insect as she lays her eggs. Other more obvious symptoms are an intense itching (especially at night) and a red rash that can occur at the area that has been scratched. The most common locations for scabies are on the sides of fingers, between the fingers, on the backs of the hands, on the wrists, heels, elbows, armpits, inner thighs and around the waist (belt line). If untreated, the female will continue to lay eggs for about five weeks. The eggs hatch and the new mites begin the cycle all over again. The mites themselves are too small to be seen without magnification. One of the great problems with scabies always has been misdiagnosis. Scabies is spread by personal contact, e.g., by shaking hands or sleeping together or by close contact with infected articles such as clothing, bedding or towels. It is usually found where people are crowded together or have frequent contact, and is most common among school children, families, roommates, and sexual partners. Scabies can be spread by the insect itself or by the egg. Prompt action is required to rid a person of the insects and eggs. Sulfur has been used (6 - 10% in lotion or cream) since Roman times as a scabicide, but you might be allergic.

Scabies mites are very fastidious. They need a warm body and can't live without one for more than an hour or so. That is why transmitting them requires prolonged physical contact of the skin-to- skin variety. It is hard, if not impossible, to catch scabies by shaking hands, hanging your coat next to someone who has it, or even sharing bedclothes that had mites in them the night before. The physical contact required to contract scabies may of course be sexual, and scabies is more common among sexually active young people. However, other forms of physical contact, such as mothers hugging their children, is sufficient to spread the mites. Over time, close friends and relatives can contract it this way too. For this reason, scabies is not considered a sexually transmitted disease in the usual sense..

What do you want to know? They are commonly known as "crabs". Small insects that are frequently passed on between people during sexual encounters or just sleeping in an area where a person who had them slept. Go to the drugstore and get the shampoo to get rid of them. You will have to use the body shampoo several times to get rid of the scabies. Then be careful where you sleep - and with whom. (I believe it is called "RID").

crabs and scabies have babies called crabies.

(I'm sorry, I couldn't resist an old inside joke).

Seriously, I don't think scabies are deadly. I think they're some kind of mite, like crabs.

body lice that burrow into your skin and cause a rash with a terrible itch. you need to see the doc so they can give you a cream that will kill them. the bugs usually don't go above your ears and probably not in the hair but just about everywhere else (except genitals). Beds need to be stripped and hot washed. everything needs to be hot washed. Big pain in butt. The doc will advise you on all the details of application and the rest.

I knew a woman who had them. They itched like crazy and the dr told her they were VERY contagious! She had to wash the sheets in very hot water along with any clothes she wore. Had to use a cream all over her body and keep it on for 24 hours before washing off. The name of the cream was Elimite.

I know they are contagious and and make your skin look bad or kind of rough. And any time I ever knew of someone who had it they had AIDS or were "junkies" and probably had something they didnt know or openly admit. But I believe if someone has it they may have something very serious they need to check out before its too late.

It is not deadly but when the other people in the family get it from you they just might kill you for it.

Gammabenzine hexachloride, is one of the treatments for this and you will have to wash everything !!! linens clothing, etc.
