i think its really awkward when i see someone across the street walking their dog too and then its awkawrd becus my beagle stares at their dog and they dont bark or anything they just stare and the other dog owner just waits to let the dog stare but i just go ahead and just continue the walk and my dog follows evenutally.

is it bad manners to do this? even if my dog growls and barks at the other dog?
should i jsut wait and let them stare at each other

btw it just happened a few minutes ago when i was walking my dog and i just felt so weird the only thing i could do was to just ignore the other dog and owner and just go.

wat do u do when u do this?

btw i walk around my neighborhood. so its just homes.

You are showing proper human and dog etiquette (feel free to smile at the other owner as you keep going.)

Dogs are not on walks to challenge other dogs. A walk is a pleasant way to get exercise, bond with your person, and read the neighborhood "newspaper".

By continuing to walk and not allowing your dog to get into a 'pissin' match" with other dogs, you are being a leader to your dog and a good example for handler behavior.

Keep up the good work! I'm very proud of you! GOOD owner!

When I walk my dog, I make sure to hold his leash very tightly around other dogs, then I just go about my business. If the other dog owner lets there dog come up to mine (I have a large dog) I take their lead and watch my dog carefully for a reaction. If they stay away from me and my dog I don't let it bother me, I assume they have a reason, like their dog might jump my dog...? So I would say don't worry about it, especially since you are across the street. I wouldn't expect another dog owner to let their dog stop just to stare or even bark at my dog because the dog feels like it. Their dogs, that's just what they do.

staring growling and barking at other dog isn't the sort of behaviour you would want. Get your dogs attention and make them sit, when they do so looking at you not the other dog reward and then walk on. As another said walking with your dog on the left and the end of the lead in your right hand arcoss your body is the way to walk them so you have control on how far away they can get from you and two hands ready to hold them in heel postion if need be.

If your dog does not socialize well with other dogs that is about the best that you can do. A "what can you do?" kind of shrug toward the owner may make it seem less awkward to the humans.

I had a really antisocial dog, but there was one neighbor who was determined to win him over. He carried treats and was obviously very confident in his own little dog's behavior. Eventually mine would look forward to running into them on our walks and was at least cordial to his dog. You could take that kind of initiative. Remember to reward your own dog for positive behavior, too.

Wow - I wish this was MY most important problem... Just keep walking man! If you feel like it, it would be polite to wave to the other dog walker - maybe even a smile. But, really, you're only walking your dog, not performing brain surgery. And quit using all those silly, childish abbreviations. It takes 10 minutes to decipher your code...

It is very important that regardless of the "manners" your neighbors exhibit with their pets, that yours is trained to behave properly.

I just finished reading one of Ceasar Millan's books and he discussed the importance of training your dog to walk with you properly. I put his ideas into play with my 13 year old dog and they worked. He learned to follow MY lead instead of being the leader. He also learned to be tolerant of others in the neighborhood, never mastered that but he was getting better at it.

I think the book of Ceasar Millan's was his first one, it told how he got to America and got started in the dog business. Has some really great information in it. A friend loaned it to me, sorry I don't have the title.

You gotta do what you gotta do. Keep in mind that dogs what to a strong pack leader. If others want to let their dogs work their way up to a fight, get away! Watch the Dog Whisperer.

when walking your dog he needs to staay on the left side of your body. when you have a confrontation with another animal it is best to pull in your leash so that you have total control. Then instead of stopping and staring try to keep your dogs attention on walking and not the other animal. Do not stop even if the animal does, talk softly to him/her and keep walking.

Etiquette is a system of rules and conventions that regulate social and professional behaviour. In any social unit there are accepted rules of behaviour upheld and enforced by legal codes; there are also norms of behaviour mandated by custom and enforced by group pressure. An offender faces no formal trial or sentence for breach of etiquette; the penalty lies in the disapproval.
