If your children don't already have arms, I don't think a rod would do the trick. How would they hold it?

No, it doesn't. It means that if parents don't hit their kids, if they spare the rod, then the kids will grow up to be spoiled. Please realize this scripture does not advocate child abuse. You should try every other way first, and only use this method as an absolute last resort and only enough to get their attention. One pop on the butt with your open hand is enough, especially if used extremely rarely. It should not be used to prove domination over the child or prove that the parent is right and the child is wrong. This scripture is often misunderstood, or not understood at all.

It think it goes along the lines of "if a parent does not dicipline their child, the child is spoiled". Back then dicipline did include straight up beatings. You do that nowadays, you go to JAIL!!!
When dealing with the bible you have to look at things in context. I see nothing wrong with spanking a child. There's a big difference between spanking and beating the hell out of your kids.
