there is no true answer because of how ice cream has developed all over the world into different tastes and such but there is evidence of ice cream being eaten in paintings in the 18th century it has been exported out of italy and france since the 1850s there is a great documentary on sundance now called gelato an endless passion that dips into the history of ice cream and the myths it is really intersting and fun

I doubt that it was really recorded when it was truly invented. Europeans were eating it in the 17 and 1800s, but who is to say that they were the first to make it?
