Perhaps, your picture quality is only as good as its weakest component. Just like PBS with their HD programs look better than the regular network programming.

First note that you MUST have an HD-DVD player in order to play an HD-DVD disc. The discs won't work in a standard DVD-player.

And the asnwer is no. Playing an HD-Dvd on an HD-DVD player would not really look better on your old standard tv. Your regular tv has a standard low-resolution. I believe it's something like 480 lines. HD-DVD's output resolutions much higher, such as 720 or 1080 lines. To you, it wouldn't look any better than watching a standard DVD on a standard DVD player.

Also, as a previous user mentioned, your tv most likely doesn't even have the correct inputs for an HD player.

It would make most sense to get a Hi-Definition Television set first, and then consider getting one of the new HD or Blu-ray dvd players. By the time you get to that point, many more models will be available and the prices will drop significantly.

It is well known in the TV industry that any improvement in quality of source will show up as better on the final display, even if that display is lower in resolution than the source. There is more to the TV image than resolution as defined by pixels, and if you use the s-video output of a HD DVD player for your standard TV, you will get a better picture from the HD discs than from standard discs. You will get the best results, however, with a HDTV display.

Agree with the last answer. There would be an improvement. Think I'd spend money on the HDTV first though, and wouldn't invest in HDDVD or Blue-Ray until one of the formats comes out a clear winner and the prices drop some.

No because it's only meant for DVD qualities. You need a HDTV.
