Assuming you're talking about a model... clear coat or varnish will protect the paint from fingerprints and scratches. It will also give it an even look, so some paint isn't glossy and some matte or flat-looking.

I would always advise varnish to finish any acrylic painting or project - acrylic paint remains porous, and fingerprints, water and airborne pollutants will embed right into the paint if not sealed.

I'm with ya chris...
Coast makes (or at least sells) a clear called SafeT that they use over Createx textile paints. Helps protect it. Chances are, that's what the shoes were painted with (createx).
But to answer your question, it couldn't hurt. The paint is on leather, so it doesn't have the same adhesive qualities as if it were on a t-shirt. I'd do it, yeah. (might make it easier to keep clean too)
