My wife and I are adults. Why does my mother-in-law insist on rectal thermometers?

Because some mother in law think they know it all, it is your child tell her NO rectal thermometer and if she does not listen then don't go around her for a while. Sit her down and say I appreciated your imput and your opinions and we will take it into consideration but without being disrecptful it will be up to my wife and I to decide what is best for our child and you need to respect whatever we decide.

Two words... Old School! Look whatever works for you is best... When your toddler is with her what does it matter how she takes your childs temp. I know that sounds like she is "winning" but at least she cares enough to try her best.

for a long time, they were the most accurate. However, these days, they have those ear thermometers that work just as well, and they are much quicker and easier to use.

I can't answer your question, but I have a suggestion.
Go and buy a brand new ear thermometer...give it to Mom and firmly but politely tell her that this is what she is to use on your child.

Coming from my end, I just think she's trying to stick it in and break it off. I think she should keep her nose out of it. No ifs ands or butts.

She has to be out of her mind if she thinks you should be using one on yourself or your wife. You only use that method on infants!!!!!
