If the birthmark is still present in an adult, it probably won't go away without laser treatment. In a baby it depends on the type of birthmark. I speak from experience because my son was a VERY birthmarked baby! He had deep purplish red discoloration on his face which several doctors mistook for port-wine stains. A port wine stain thickens and darkens with age (think Mikhail Gorbachev's forehead), and facial port wine stains, especially in the eyelid region, may or may not be associated with a brain disorder called sturge-webber syndrome. After the doctors scared the wits out of me by telling me my baby's brain might calcify and also that I would need to have him put under general anesthesia 10 to 20 times for laser treatments so that the port wine stains could be removed before they began to thicken and disfigure his face, i did my own research and figured out they were not port wine stains at all. The key: since port wine stains are associated with nerve pathways and each side of the body is seperately enervated, a single port wine stain will not cross over the midline. Since my son'r birthmarks crossed the midline, I refused all treatment and they did fade on their own. He has a slightly uneven skin pigmentation now which no one notices unless it is pointed out to them. He also had a large mixed hemangioma on his side. A hemangioma is a raised vascular birthmark. there are 3 kinds: Strawberry hemangioma ('strawberry mark'), which is a raised bright red area; cavernous hemangioma, which is a raised, blue bump that resembles an injury; and mixed hemangioma, which is a cavernous hemangioma covered by a strawberry hemangioma. My son had a mixed hemangioma. These appear a week or two after birth, and keep growing until about age 2. Then they start to shrink, and most are 100% gone by elementary school age. My son's is completely gone except a white spot which does not tan like the surrounding skin. Mongolian spots (birthmarks that look like a flat, blue-black bruise), and your typical flat, pinkish areas ('angel kisses' or 'stork bites') fade, usually completely. Hope this was helpful and not way more info than you needed.

Yes they can. My husband had one that covered his chin, neck and chest and now there is nothing but a little tiny spot on his chest. His mom uses to tell him to wash his neck and face all the time because it looked like dirt. She said after she'd think about it she'd remember it was a birth mark and feel rotten about it!

They usually go away by the age of 2 or at least fade considerably. My son has this on his forehead (he is almost 13 months) and it has faded a good bit. It gets brighter when he cries. The answer your doctor gave you is correct. Its basically pressure from birth, where that particular area has "fused" together.

Most birthmarks will never go away. Some show up only during the summer and then seemly fade and come back when summer returns.

im pretty sure birthmarks can fade with age, but i dont believe they disappear completely unless you have surgery on that particular spot. im sure you can also have surgery to have it removed if you want it to be.

No. Sometimes they might fade away, but one day they will be back.
