For CTS, they are likely to use needles (versus surface electrodes), and I'm sorry but it is not a comfortable test. I am a physical therapist who has had many of my patients go through these...haven't found one yet who found it to be a good experience. It is, however, very satisfying to get the results of the test and "know for sure" what is going on. Most people are glad just know what is causing their problem.

I have had it, but not for carpal tunnel. I had to have it done to the nerves in my face. The "needles" are really, really thin probes and they totally don't hurt. I was anxious about getting it done, but the anxiety of it was way worse than the actual test. My test took a long time, maybe an hour, but once I got used to the process and realized it didn't hurt, it was no big deal at all.

I had it done a year ago. It really isn't that painful. They don't use needles. They just run electricity through your nerves. They start out low and gradually increase the amount of electricity. It's actually very interesting. It just feels uncomfortable for a second when they are taking a measurement. It's nothing compared to the actual pain of CT syndrome.

several once a year to be exact!!! I will not lie very painful not only the needles the electrical shocks are awful. Time wise, depends how much of the body they have to do, example, the nerve along the leg they have to hit that nerve several times ex. 19 or more, about 10 minutes remember though that is only one nerve and they will check several. Good Luck!!! I once saw a grown man running out of my Docs office cussing non stop

Well mine was for pre-op, for a disk removal.
I remember NO pain. Very similar to an EKG, sticky-pads on several places on my chest and legs. All it is, is a test to map nerve's and voltage levels so the surgeon knows if he pushes or moves the nerves. hope that works for you
But why not ask you doctor?
WHOA this was for your mom!!
Women do not keep up on science and stuff. I take it she does not donate blood for you :)
Even the surgery will be easy.
If she is all upset and stressed out she is expending energy that she needs to heal.
My disk removal was preceded by a quad by-pass because the anesthesiologist was afraid I might die. Had to be a joke, but I guess I am better off now and medicare + insurance 0 cost.
Good luck I'll pray mom to relax.

It doesnt hurt but it is uncomfortable for a bit but if she has carpal tunnel her nerves will be dull and wont feel it as much as someone who doesnt have it.

It really isn't that big of a deal. Don't put on lotion after your shower - that's the best advice I can give you. Don't smoke, don't drink coffee (They gave you a list, didn't they?!?) How long it takes depends on the assistants - some of them are far more efficient than others. If they are on the ball a few minutes is all it takes.

It is uncomfortable for sure. If she does not like needles she is not going to like the test, and the needles are not the bad part of it.
