You will find spotting and the vulva will be enlarged.
If you don't want puppies, you must keep her away from any male dogs, of course you'll probably have every male dog from miles around hanging around your house. When you take her outside, stay with her or put her on a leash long enough to do what she has to do, then bring her inside. Normally the cycle runs 7 days going in, 7 seven days in and 7 days going out. She is very fertile at this time so take care to protect her from getting pregnant and consider having her spayed so you won't have to go thru this again.

First with her age. female's first heat can range anywhere from 6-10 months depending on the breed. You will notice some light pinky discharge at first but the most telling evidence is her vulva. It can get almost 5 time the size! look at your girls behind it will be swollen and enlarged. If she's an indoor pooch, you can get doggy diapers at any pet stores to prevent dripping stains. It normally last about 2-3 weeks.

Yes female dogs bleed which is called "going into heat".Be sure to keep her away from male dogs or you will get a bunch of little doggies. Try a pet store. They have doggie diapers but I think dogs don't like to wear them. If you get your dog spayed, that will solve the problem. No more bleeding.....Check with your local humane society for their prices. They are usually real cheap.

The Vulva itself will become swollen. You can visibly sometimes see red discharge just like humans. They can be in heat without any discharge. Make sure u keep her away from other intact males and if worse comes to worse u can buy doggy panties to keep the mess off the furniture. Best way to keep this problem in check....HAVE HER SPAYED ASAP!!! Good luck!

My dogs usually smell pretty bad the week before. I don't know why but it has happened to all three of them when they've been in heat.

Bleeding will give it away every time! If you do not want her to have pups, better keep her away from males for the next 3 weeks.

Dogs start to have a bloody discharge when they can conceive. It means she is in "season" or in "heat", she is ready to get pregnant. It is a normal process, if you are concerned, call you vet.

You may or may not see blood. so watch her to see if she is licking herself more to keep clean!! She will also be swollen. Mark this on a calender to see when 6 months is so you can expect it!!

They bleed just like humans
You might want to put sheets or towels over your furniture if she's allowed on them
