I'm a maid of honor for someone I don't know that well...I'm worried about my speech

I would start w/ something like, "can you believe this bit** asked me to be in this wedding and I don't even know her middle name? And I paid $300 for this ugly dress that I will never wear again and shouldn't be wearing now. So, I am going to pass around this cup and I want you to put whatever money you were going to give to them to me so I can recoup my losses. Oh, yeah-Cheers." And make sure you say it from the heart. Uh oh, why would someone you don't know that well ask you to be her maid of honor? Well, you're in it, so let's get to it.
First, gather information, then focus your remarks on what you know and understand. If you're closer to the groom, focus your speech on the relationship between the two of them and what you know of the groom. You're allowed to tell a story about him in the speech -- it doesn't have to be about her.
Second, keep it to no more than a minute or two. Easier to practice and deliver a shorter speech. You've heard about brevity being the soul of wit? All true.
Third, self-deprecating humor is always good. But so is sappy sentiment.
Fourth, end on an actual toast: "here's to...so-and-so on this very happy day, and may there be many, even happier ones to come" or something like that.
Fifth, OWN IT. Whatever you do, deliver with enthusiasm and passion. That's the most important part. Don't be shy. Half the crowd will be a bit intoxicated, the other half will be excited to hear what you have to say. HAVE FUN!

she picked you as maid of honor for some reason. I would say from the heart, but if you don't know her that well. Just tell them what a lovely couple they make, and toast to a long life together filled with lots of happiness. Cheers, and drink up.
