At this point the purpose of the fighting is to ensure the new democratic government of Iraq succeeds and becomes stable. The international forces are the only thing holding the country together, if Iraq falls apart there might be a big regional conflict with dire consequences to global economy and security. The reconstruction of Iraq until now has been an absolute fiasco but the US as leader of the operation needs to be responsible and leave that country better than it found it.

Us Humans, are in "IRAQ", because of an idiot that gassed thousands of helpless people, and would shoot anyone that wanted to play sports, become independent, etc. And another reason we had to go in there, was to liberate a country from a "Hitler" Wanna Be.... depends on who you ask.
Conservatives say its because of weapons of mass destruction.
Liberals say its a pointless war over oil
My personal opinion, has nothing to do with oil, that would be basically pointless, I don't care if he had WMD, Saddam was a sick sadistic scumbag who needed to be removed for the sake of all humanity. He should have been gotten rid of 20yrs ago, and now the world is playing catchup.

I think the purpose is to alienate all of the fanatical arabs and turn other foreigners against us, while raising the price of oil so that the oil companies can make more profits.

Getting rid of that horrible regime of Saddam's was good though.
