I'm looking after my sisters dog and the bloody mutt has just woken me up at 2:30 A.M. as there are a few little rumbles of thunder off in the distance, should I kill the damned thing and go back to bed or what? I'm not too happy

close all the windows/blinds so the dog doesn't see any lightening if that's happening. the dog doesn't feel safe and doesn't understand whats going on. keep it under the blankets with you, or make a "safe" place for it to be near you when this happens. but make sure not to talk sweet to it such as, "it'll be ok, good girl" etc because you'll only encourage the frightened behavior. so most importantly is to pretend like it isn't happening, the noise and thunder, but don't ignore the dog.

Also make sure the doors are locked and the dog can't get out. they tend to run away when these noises happen (like fourth of July) because they're so scared.

Poor little thing. Dogs are afraid of thunder! Instead of killing it, you must learn to shower love for it. How would you feel if you are the dog and you are afraid of thunder and your master went to bed or even kill you? You will hate it right? to prevent the noise being louder, close all the windows and use music to replace it. That way you can go to sleep and the puppy won't wake you up!!!

Give it time, the dog should calm down. If not, sorry you'll have to just close your bedroom door and try to ignore it. Call your sis in the morning if possible and ask her what you need to do for the dog in this situation just in case it should happen to storm more while your dog sitting. My dog is a huge wussy when it storms too. All I can do is let him curl up next to my bed in a blanket and hope he doesn't bark or whimper much.
Sorry I can't be more help.

What are you doing looking after your sisters dog when it's clear you hate dogs?

Anyone with half a brain should understand that thunder is unnerving to most animals. Yelling at the critter isn't gonna help.

You are a real d!ckhead and shouldn't be allowed around any kind of animal.

There are a lot of dogs that are afraid of storms. You will need to let the dog find a place that is comforting to him/her. Try the bathroom or closet. If you are going to be keeping the dog for a few days and storms are forcast then you may want to get some sedative from the dog's vet.

I see why you don't have dogs of your own. Put the 'damned thing' back to bed and then do the same for yourself. Just think, killing it would cause far too much hassle and won't gain your sleep back!! Sorry you got woken up...

=) Killing the dog would work but your sister might not be to happy about it. My old dog was terrified of thunder storms I used to let her sleep on the floor of my bedroom during one and that calmed her down maybe it'll work for you.

AAAHHH, look for the poor dog, as much as you don't want to, you need to make your sister happy. What if that was you out there in the thunderstorm all by yourself, in the dark, cold night...put your clothes on and get out there.
