In some cases, cameras are dropped by experienced photographers, even if they are quite careful. It depends on the situation they are put in.
Reading photography forums, I have read a story of someone dropping a $4000 EOS 1D in a stream and then struggling to recover it. The camera was serviced by Canon and repaired but the $1500 lens that was attached did not survive.
I also read the story of a nature photographer who had to abandon his expensive telephoto lens and camera on a tripod because a grizzly bear was approaching. The bear pushed the tripod and the whole kit fell on the ground... which was quite soft since nothing got damaged.
I have not yet dropped my cameras, but on one occasion had a $120 Singh Ray filter caught off my hand by a gust of wind and cast down a cliff. It was stopped by a plant and I had to crawl head down on the cliff to recover it.
All this to say that in some extreme situations, anything can happen.

I work in a camera store and see all too many cameras that have been dropped and broken every day. I think that the majority of dropped camera issues could be solved quite easily. If users would A) put the straps on the camera and B) keep the camera in the case, most of the drops would be solved. Two other minor issues, don't every bring a camera to the beach-no matter how careful you are, Sand will always win(Buy an $8.00 disposable instead-it's cheaper that replacing your camera). If you want drop-proof, buy an Olympus Stylus 720 SW. It can be dropped from as much as five feet onto cement and survive.

Because they arent using a $30,000 Hasselblad H2D 39 megapixel camera. Fact is that cameras really aren't that expensive these days, and despite the economy people seem to have a lot of disposable income.

Because new cameras particularly the digital kinds are tiny and cheap. Tiny so they easily slip from your hands. Cheap so you do not care much if they damaged or lost. If the camera is very expensive, say costing about $5000.00 or more, people will be very careful in handling them.
