Depends on how much time you put into it. If you went to Japan and studied full time you could make shodan in about two years. If you go to lessons twice a week for 1.5 hours it's going to take a lot longer.

Depend...

If it's a jiu jitsu at your local mall with flashy name such as "Squatting Dragon jiu jitsu" then you just need to wave enough moneys in the instructor's face and you will get it in 20 mins.

If it's brazilian jiu jitsu and you're really really talented at it, four years, but that is only very small percent. In most case it take 8 to 15 years.

In Japan jiu jitsu I have no idea.

8-15 years to get a black belt in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. Then once you get a black belt you get a stripe every three years.

You cannot accurately put a time limit on something like this. There are to many variables.
Any answer you are given will be a guess at best.

My advice is to not focus on rank. Rank means nothing.
Focus on form and training.

Just as an example. We went to a tourney (I HATE tourneys.) because my friend was dying of cancer and wanted to compete so we helped him out. He was a white belt who studied for about 3 years ( hardcore, night and day, daily, he said it blocked out the pain of his situation). Tourney day came and he said he wanted to compete in the black belt fighting. We cringed but it was his wish. The tourney was at some inner-city gym and it was a rough one. This white belt tour apart the whole black belt division. he took first and put on his white belt to collect his trophy. he has long since pasted but he taught many of us an important lesson that day. Rank means nothing. Those out there who are resting on the comfort of there black-belts need to re-think things.
