It is true. The gospel according to Luke traces Jesus' family tree back to the first man, Adam, the creation of God. There is a great website on the Complete Bible Genealogy - Jesus Family Tree (see web site link below). It is a wonderful website, and explains where each person, from the Bible, fits into the tree.

Discussions of virgin birth apart, there are two genealogies of Jesus. In Luke going back to Adam and thus God and in Matthew going back to Abraham. However the two genealogies apper to contradict themselves unless you make the assumption that Heli who was Joseph's father was really his father in law and thus Mary's father.

Jesus is claimed to descend from the House of David, which is where the Messiah was supposed to descend from.
