When the Lord has pity on Jacob and again chooses Israel and settles them on their own soil, the aliens will join them and be counted with the house of Jacob. The house of Israel will take them and bring them along to its place, and possess them as male and female slaves on the Lord's soil, making captives of its captors and ruling over its oppressors. (Isaiah 14:1-2 NAB)

We'll have the usual apologists squirming in their seats. The only way out for you sheep is to take *JUST THE GOOD MORAL STUFF* (about 1%) of the bible, and trash the rest. Become a humanist, and look for good everywhere, and god nowhere.

See... this is where the Bible enthusiasts say, well... That's the OLD Testament... you know... God changed his mind on some things...

(... but never, well, he was wrong, on some things)

It's called selective interpretation... people only use the parts of scripture that suit their needs.

God says Homosexuality's an abomination, but he was wrong about the slaves... oh... and the women as chattle... oh, and the whole stoning sinner thing... and... Oh yeah! I'm no longer that vengeful. You know how I said don't kill, yet I destroyed most of Civilization with a flood? Well... do as I say, not as I do...

Sigh...

Slavery was going to happen then. Period.
God does not approve, but did enact laws for the benefit of the slave.
Trust me, it was better to be a slave of an Israelite, than a pagan. Some slaves for the Jews even chose to remain slaves after the allotted time was up.

Anyway, I chose to be a slave of Jesus.

The Christians on here will shriek "Only in the Old Testament, which doesn't count!".

This argument is contradictory, as they have no problems believing a literal interpretation of the Creation story in Genesis.......and if the Old Testament is irrelevant, why is it included in the Christian bible at all?

You're at the stage we all go through - it's the sophomoric stage where one thinks one's discoveries of contradictions and negativity in traditional religious texts is unique. It progresses to where one feels the need to teach (actually, shock) the 'ignorant masses'. The underlying motivation is self promotion. I went through it (and still am, to a lesser but still significant degree). It does make you cringe as you get older and think about it :).

God worked in the culture of the people. He could have forced everyone to be perfect but then you would really be screaming....Jim

You have more Old Testament historical stuff here. We've already answered this in another question, my friend.

God related to the people of the Old Testament according to the time and place they lived in... just as God relates to us according to our time and place.
