On dry hair (preferably hair that is not same-day shampooed) use a metal-toothed comb and lift each section of hair and start at the scalp and bring the comb up and down about 2" at a time....depending on the look you want continue over the area you want to "poof". If you are going for the "full monty" do the entire head, spray lightly all over with All Set hairspray then proceed to styling....it takes a nack so practice. I wouldn't recommend this for every day especially if your hair is damaged, or if you have recently done a chemical procedure as breaking can easily occur. I can appreciate artfully teased tresses.....reminds me of the 60's!

I've always heard never to tease hair, but to "backcomb" it.

The difference is: Teasing mats the hair against itself and you do so by letting go of the ends as you brush/comb toward the scalp.
Backcombing is similar, but you hold the lock of hair as you brush toward the scalp, preventing the matting.

Both are detrimental, as it pushes the shafts of hair the wrong way, but if you have to choose, backcomb.

"How to backcomb hair to give it fullness. Teasing can add fullness to a hairstyle and give fine, limp hair greater body. Take a 1- x 3-inch section of hair, comb it out, and hold it away from the scalp at 90 degrees. With a fine-tooth comb, gently comb the section from the ends toward the roots. A slight tangle will form at the base and the hair will stand away from the head. The more times you backcomb, the more fullness your hairstyle will have.

You can tease your hair all over for a very shaped style or do just one area that needs lift. When you have finished teasing, brush or comb the surface of the hair lightly to smooth it.

Avoid too much teasing; it can damage hair badly. Gently comb out the snarls before you wash your hair."
