I believes the keys are in these verses.
15 He said to them, "But whom say ye that I AM?".
16 & Simon Peter answered & said, "You are the Christ, the Son of the living God."
17 & Jesus answered & said to Hhim, "Blessed are you Simon Barjona: for flesh & blood has not revealed it to you, but my Father in Heaven.
18 & I say also to you, That thou are Peter (Petros, piece of rock), & upon this Rock (Petra, mass of rock, fem.) I will build my church; & the gates of hell will not prevail against it.
19 & I will give you the keys of the Kingdom of Heaven: & whatever you shall bind on earth shall be bound in heaven: & whatsoever you shall loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven.
20 Then charged he his disciples that they shouldn't tell anyone that He was Jesus the Christ.
Who has the keys?

The text itself specifies that Peter was given the keys - not all the apostles. The keys to the Kingdom represent earthly authority - just as Christ was given all authority on earth and Heaven by the Father, so he transmits that authority to Peter.
The keys mean that the forgiveness of sins ("loosed in Heaven") is tied to Peter, who has been established just before as the foundation stone of the Church. (By the way, "Petros" was the masculinization of the literal Greek translation "petra" from the original Aramaic, which only had one word for "rock" - "kepha." Matthew, writing in the Greek, couldn't very well call Peter female - but neither could he imply that the foundation of the Church was just a pebble. The differing conjugations were evidently understood, because there is no hint of scandal over this in writings from times when the Church still used Greek. In any case, does it make any sense to give power to forgive sins, i.e. the keys, to anyone other than the steward of the Church?) And, since forgiveness of sins is integral to salvation, the gift of the keys entrusts the Church with stewardship over salvation as well.
The question then becomes: given that the keys indicate forgiveness and salvation; given that they are given as a gift to the Church, in the care of Peter; and given that forgiveness and salvation are still important today; who has them today? Well, there's only one office which claims to derive authority from Peter. And that's the papacy. The Pope, and in him the Catholic Church, has the keys.

Hi, The answer is kind of long, lot of scriptures!
What were the keys entrusted to Peter? Matt16:19 I will give you the keys to the kingdom of HEAVEN;What so ever you bind on earth shall be considered bound in heaven; what so ever you loose on earth shall be considered loosed in heaven.
In Revelations, Jesus referred to a symbolic key used by himself to open up privilages and opportunities to humans ( Jesus spoke the gospel to his favorite, John, through Holy Spirit, to write for us) So on Rev3.7,8 Jesus told John to write this"Here is the message of the Holy and Faithful one who has the key of David, so that when he opens, nobody can close, and when he closes nobody can open...I have opened a door in front of you that nobody can close.
Peter used "Keys" entrusted to him to open up to Jews, Samaritans,Gentiles the opportunity to recieve God's Holy Spirit with a view to their entering Gods Heavenly Kingdom.
Please read these scriptures:
Acts2:14-39 relating to the first key..offer to the Jews
Acts 8:14-17 same offer to repent and follow Christ to the Samaritans Key # 2
ACTS 10:24-48, THE 3RD. key offerering the hope of Heaven to the Gentiles.
So, I guess although Jesus is the judge of the living and the dead, He gave the figurative keys to Peter to open the way to the national groups to the right to Heaven.
Remembering that before Christs death...ONLY Isrialites had that heavenly hope. The Figurative keys gave all mankind the hope.
Hope that was not too muddled! Some times I get carried away!

The keys were taken from this earth during the apostasy when the apostles were murdered. The Pope does not have the keys and never has. There was no one for those keys to be passed to from the apoostles. If you continue studying the New Testiment you will find many references to the great apostasy. The keys were restored in this dispensation and why you should study more about The Church of Jesus Christ LDS.

He answered your question in the second part of the sentence. A key is used to gain access, so of course the word key here is a metaphor. He is promising access to the Kingdom of Heaven. When they "bind" or "loose," (exercise authority) in His name they are accessing the Kingdom. The power is not of themselves (or ourselves) but of God. It is God's power, accessible because of Christ on the Cross, because of His life, because of His shed blood, because of the stripes upon his body, because He willingly laid down his life for us and provided redemption.
Who has the keys? The Redeemed.

Peter had them then, his successor, our current Pope, has them now.
The words "Petros" and "Petra" are Greek, but Jesus spoke in Aramaic. The Aramaic word for "rock" has only one spelling. So, the word would have the same meaning in both cases of verse.
Tranlated literally from Aramaic would be, "You are "rock" and on this "rock" I will build my Church."
Furthermore, the difference made in the Greek translation of the word for "rock" was most likely made because Peter is a man, and they would not use the feminine form of the word to call him his name.

Jesus meant things change. Today you ride a donkey, in 2006 you ride a rocket. so I have to leave things flexible,it won't work in 2006 to say ride your donkey. So he gave peter flexability to change the words and rules, Saying what ever you say is ok, I'll say it is ok..
