Our cat who is 9 has started to go to the toilet in different places throughout our apartment (we moved into it 3 wks ago from a duplex)
At first he was going in his box we placed in our on-suite bathroom, but now he is leaving 'calling cards' in different areas which is very puzzling to us.

Is it a brand new apartment or has someone lived there before. If someone lived there before the cat may be reacting to a cat that was there previously. I have not gone through this but an aquantance has. I would suggest cleaning the area with a product used to kill the enzymes in the area.

He's marking his territory. 3 weeks isn't long ago...and even if he's neutered, he will still spray or even defecate in areas to define that this domain is his. It's possible that the previous renter had a cat or dog, and your cat can still smell it...which would be threatening to his new territory. The best thing I can suggest is to go to the pet store, and get some enzyme odor remover to put on areas he's sprayed. When that's dry, there are products like 'Indoor NO!' that you can spray in those same areas that will discourage him from doing this. Make sure his litter box is always clean so he'll be drawn to it rather than to the walls, and of course, if you SEE him doing it, give him a firm NO! Good luck!

First, is the litter box kept clean all the time? If not, that's probably his problem.

Another thing major would be the move and he's retaliating against you because he doesn't know what is happening and he's upset. The best thing to do is make sure he's in good health and gently scold him, pick him up and put him in the litter box a few times. In time, he'll get over the nervousness caused by the move.

There could be a number of reasons for this, but I repeat my ever-present mantra: "If you're unsure, see a vet."

Because she's 9, she's not exactly old, but she's not a young kitty anymore. It could be from stress, or it could be from a medical problem, ranging from UTI to crystals to kidney issues to cancer. It may be something that can be easily cured, but you don't want to wait for that.

It's possible that she's developed a UTI or kidney infection exacerbated by the stress from the move. Cats don't deal with change OR stress well, and she's got a big dose of both. If something spooked her, or was painful is use of the litterbox, she may avoid it by association.

You might try moving the box to another location and then slowly moving it back to where you want it to be permanenty, but I would DEFINITELY have her checked by a vet ASAP just to be sure.

Good luck!!

It could be a number of things....

He could have a urinary tract infection (if it's #1) or just marking terratory since it's new to him, and his smell isn't all over it.

If it's number 2, he might be upset about the move, or not like the location of the litterbox now. One possible idea is to get a few more litterboxes, put them around the apartment, and see if he uses any of the others more often than not.

I had a cat years in the past that became enthusiastic about our small bathing room. each and every time someone might want to flow in and close the door she stuck her paws below. I used to flow the little throw rug round with my ft so she might want to snatch at it less than the door, and that grew to develop into one in each and every of her popular video games. None of my different cats ever did something like that with the lavatory. And with the cat I genuinely have now i am going to't oftentimes close the lavatory door each and every of ways, or she'll stand interior the corridor and cry till I enable her in. it truly is humorous even as visitors use the lavatory. they imagine they are being attacked because Hobbes will push on the door and howl.

he could be sending you a "message" that he is unhappy with the move...he should adjust. One thing, do not clean up his calling cards in front of him, it will only reinforce his behavior by drawing attention to it. Put him in a seperate room, clean up the mess, then let him back out. My kitty did this behavior for awhile, but is improving - I think partly to no reinforcing the behavior. Sometimes when things in their lives change, they "rebel" by doing this. Another thing: make sure his kitty litter box is cleaned regularily, cats may go potty elsewhere if their litterbox is nasty. Good luck!

If he's doing #1 throughout the house, he may have a bladder infection and needs to go to the vet. I had this problem with my cats.

One of them crapped in this new house for quite awhile after we moved in. I think it's a territorial thing if it's #2.

Maybe you should have more litter boxes around your house. Sometimes they get confused when you change places and forget where they are suppose to go. I would try that and see if it makes a difference. Good luck and God Bless.

Your kitty is adjusting for one thing. THe other thing I've learned is sometimes they will do things like that to tell you something is wrong. A lot of times it can mean a bladder infection or a UTI. I would get him checked out :)
