Did the dog have any injuries? Is the dog current on his shots?
Those are the two questions you should ask.
My ex-racing Greyhounds chase the squirrels, the rabbits, anything smaller than themselves. The only occasionally catch anything, and have not (to date) killed anything they caught.
The very first squirrel that my grey caught put up one hell of a fight, and gave my boy a pretty deep cut on his nose. His shots were current, so I kept an eye on him, and he was fine.

Rabies is rarely reported in rabbits, so I don't think you have to be worried about that. Tularemia is a baterial pathogen that is probably the main thing to be concerned about. I would expect it to cause a fever in your dog, just as it would in humans. Humans catch tularemia from contact w/ wild rabbits or ticks, and only a few hundred cases are seen per year across the entire country. Since your dog would be at risk in the same way (from a rabbit), I wouldn't worry---the chances are very low. For what it's worth, I live near Philadelphia and my cat catches rabbits in the back yard all the time, and I haven't had a problem with anything. But you can always call your vet and ask if there's something they should test for or some condition you should be looking for.

I don't think so as dogs saliva contain penicillin so he should be OK. I'd be more worried about where the rabbit came from, was it a pet? Not that that worries me, its just that the owner may find out, I believe in everything being natural, and it is a natural act for a dog to do this.

It is possible for them to get worms if they eat it. Fleas are highly possible, rabbits are usually loaded with them.
My hounds get a rabbit occasionally, whenever one is stupid enough to come inside the dog yard.

will your dog be okay? what about the rabbit?! check around to see if there are any nests (they are usually holes) around your yard. Mother rabbits don't stay with their babies during the day so check to be sure. Also, I don't think you need to be worried about your dog. =)

that is like so normal for dogs...
i mean dogs are hunters...
my dog also like to hunt some chicken, mouses, and once he also killed my parrot...
u should only be worried if rabbit was dead before ur dog hunted it...but chances for that are low...if u are still worried visit veterinary

yeah, my dog came in with a rabbit she caught too. i wouldn't want it to become a habit but it just comes naturally. I would take it away and scold him/her. lets hope rabbits learn to run faster. no can,t hurt anything unless it was your neighbors pet!

Some dogs have the instinct to hunt. My puppy Autum used to do that with birds. Ask your vet if there are ways to maybe tone it down a but. But nothings wrong with her she just doing her own thang.

My dogs have killed rabbits on more than one occasion, it has never hurt them, it can give them worms though, you might want to take it to the vet if he or she starts the old butt drag.
