colonoscopies arent too bad. youre placed under conscious sedation, which means that they give you medication (fentanyl and versed usually) which make you stay awake and breathing on your own, but make you not remember the event. youre comfortable, you have a good pain killer medication on board (fentanyl) and dont feel anything (or dont remember anything that you feel). the whole procedure lasts about 40 minutes or so, barring complications. if youre nervous just rest assured that you will be comfortable and will not remember the procedure nor feel any discomfort during the procedure. after the procedure, you will pass alot of gas as the doctor will put some gas into your intestines to make them easier to see with the camera. for some, the gas is uncomfortable, and people may experience some slight discomfort after the procedure, but no pain.

The point that is missed over and over is that they drug you so you don't remember it rather than it not hurting. If it were for any other reason, such as to save embarassment, then why are gyno exams not done under sedation?? As this is the case I wish there was a little more honesty from the doctors and they admitted it does hurt, you will feel some pain and discomfort but you won't recall it and we will try not to rip open anything vital while we do it. Colonoscopies may be vital and life saving but treatingus patients like morons/children is not on. GIVE US THE FACTS AND LET US DO THINGS FOR THE RIGHT REASONS.

Because cancer runs in my family. I had breast cancer and my dad had colon cancer (all my grandparents died of cancer). I promised myself I would get a colonoscopy when I turned 50. The proceedure wasn't bad, your pretty much doped up. I didn't care for the prep stuff though (very salty). They recommend you mix it with another liquid and drink lots of clear liquids while doing the prep. I drank sips of the stuff followed by tons of water till I got it all down. You might as well stay in the bathroom for the next several hours. They did find two precancerous polyps, which were removed and said I don't need to have another colonoscopy for 5 years.

that actual proceedure is nothing. It does not hurt at all. The doctor put you under anestesa and you feel nothing. The bad part of the entire thing is the drink that you have to prep with that cleans you out. It is horrible tasting. If you can find a doctor that give "the pill" instead of the drink, than you will be in great shape.
