It really depends.

Other than the colour, what is the texture of your poo? Does it float or does it sink? Is it very pungent smelling?

If your poo is sticky, black and sinks, it could jollywell just be poo that has been left in your body for a long time. We call these aged faeces and they are better out of your body than IN your body.

However, the colour of your poo may also be affected by the things that you eat.

Maybe you can monitor a little. Try to avoid black coloured foods and see if you still have black poo tommorrow. If you do, you might want to see a doctor just to make sure it is nothing serious.

Not normally. Do you often drink to excess? While usually just a result of diet, black poos can be a sign of an ailment called melena, which is an internal bleed. If you've had a lot of vitamins, licorice, Pepto-Bismol, iron or blueberries lately, it might just be that. If that's not part of the problem, you need to have a Fecal Occult Blood Test, which is a stool test (done at home) to test your stool's blood level.

Are you taking iron supplements? That can cause black poo. But so can internal bleeding so it might be good to get checked out by a doc.

Blood in your stool will turn black. It could be evidence of internal bleeding as a result of your alcohol consumption. You might want to be more moderate in your drinking, and see a doctor.

It could signal that you have blood in your stool, but there are other reasons that people can have black stools. Taking a lot of antacids (milk of magnesia or similar) can give your stool a black discoloration, as can eating (no, I am not joking) too many oreo cookies. If you are having that symptom and you have not been chugging the maalox or eating bags of oreos, I would see your doctor about it.

These are all good answers. Could be diet or bleeding in the intestines. I just would like to add that taking Pepto Bismol will turn your stools jet black.

It doesn't have to mean that there is a gastro intestinal bleed. If you ate too may Oreo cookies that could do it. If you had a drink or food that had blue dye in it that could also do it.
But my advice to you would be to make a visit to your Dr. to rule out the bleeding because if you don't what you don't know could kill you. It's better to be safe than SORRY.

If it's black like tar, I would suggest that you see a doctor. You may have a bleeding ulcer or something. Are tire/weak as well?
