It went on when my father was in, and I dealt with it when I was in the Navy... It is really just a sort of rivalry, like different high schools... Actually, I had many, many Marines as friends after boot, and everyone just seems to tire of the game eventually. We did different kinds of jobs... Now that I am an old man,. I am very thankful for both branches, and realize how much harder it was to be a good Marine than it was to be a good Sailor. The Marines are taught to fight, and they take it to heart, and do a helluva good job. Don't let it worry you, everything comes out in the wash.....

It's all in fun. For whoever said Marines won't admit they are part of the Department of the Navy. The first thing I had to learn at Paris Island (Marine Corps 'boot camp') was the chain of command from my Drill Instructor up though the Secretary of the Navy to the President of the United States. That was every person by name and rank.
Other this I learned from recruiters:
ARMY = Ain't Ready for Marines Yet
Marine = Muscles Are Required, Inelegance Not Expected
Navy = Taxi service for Marines.

just an old rivalry, kind of a tradition, navy call marines "jarheads" and marines call the navy "squids" (which they are) but when it comes down to business, the navy/Marine corps team works like a fine tuned machine. and besides, when i went thru marine boot camp, the navy back then had boot camp across the fence at san diego. when a squid recruits cry because his training is to "tough" they bring the recruit to the other side of the fence and show them marine corps training, that usually makes them thankful for where they are! lol this is the truth!

The marines ask for it. They are so psyched up, they think marines dug the panama canal with entrenching tools for a training exercise.
I think the Navy and Marines go at it because the Marines are part of the Navy, and that sticks in their craw. Most of them don't believe it even when you point out that their paper work says department of the Navy.

Actually the navy has one purpose. They are basically transportation for marines. Some squids just can't get over this fact. Another thing that bothers them is that they don't have much fun on liberty because the women always want marines. Your recruitor is just one of the many who regrets he can't be a marine. And that's the truth.

It used to be worse. Nowadays, it's just a bunch of Jarheads who can't believe that they are subordinate to the Navy.
Just kidding, sheesh! I have nothing but love for the Devil Dogs. They handle their s**t.
