It's a popular misconception that 1 human year = 7 dog years.

It's closer to 6 years, or more accurately 6 years and 4 months.

Life expectancy for a dog is 12 years and 7 months, for a human it is 81 years (81 years divided by 12 years 7 months = 6 years 4 months).

Some dogs live longer than others. An Irish wolfhound lives an average of 6 years 2 months so one human year is equal to 13 dog years. At the other end of the scale is a miniature poodle which lives an average of 14 years and 9 months, one human year being equal to about five and a half dog years.

Also, dogs mature a lot quicker than humans. As a rough guide 10.5 dog years per human year for the first 2 years, then 4 dog years per human year for each year after.

7 years

arbitrarily chosed 7 dog years to our 1 doesnt make a whole lot of sense. I would say though that they generally are adult age by 2 years ... then you should compare their age to the avg lifespan of dogs in their breed. Like english bulldogs only live 8 years, so obviously the ratio doesnt make a whole lot of sense, but if you have a 7 year old bulldog you know that the senior citizen may get a little slower and sleep a little longer. Hey! and dont take those averages too seriously .. afterall the average american only lives to be 72 or so and well most of my relatives live a heck of a lot older than that.

depends on the breed. For all, the first year of life is equivilant to somewhere from 15-18 years old humans. From the second year on, it varies. Small breeds, which normally live longer, the time varies from 3-6 years. For large breeds, it is from 5-8 years depending on the breed. Some large breeds are only expected to live 8 years while others are expected to live 11 years. Small breeds usually live from 12-16 years. What I suggest, is that you take the average age of death for a human, roughly 75, subract 18 for the first year of life which leaves you with 57. That 57, divide it by the life expectancy of the breed. For example, Irish wolfhounds are expected to live 8 years, so 57 divided by 8 give you roughly 7 years. Shepherds are expected to live 10-13 years so lets say, 11, 57 divided by 11 is roughly 5 years. And so on. So who won the bet? Or did you both lose?

It depends on the breed of dog. Smaller dogs age much slower (ie: 3-5 years per each human year) where large or giant breeds age much faster (7-9 years per each human year).
That is why you will see 20 (human year) old poodles, and to see a Rotty that is 14 (human years) is very unusual.
I hope you win the bet!
