feet per second. As other s have said. Also ft-lbs. is foot pounds of energy. Basically these two give you a ball park on what the round in question is good for. The higher the number on fps means that is shoots faster and thereby shoots flatter for longer ranges. Speed also contributes to the ability of a round to do damage, with all things being equal. i.e. a 30-30 with a 15 grain bullet at 1900 fps, has less range than a .308 with a 150 grain bullet going 2800 fps.

It is a way of measuring the velocity of a bullet exiting the gun barrel and measured in feet-per-second.
Example: A 115 grain, .25-06 bullet exits a 24" rifle barrel at 3,000+ FPS.
