They are probably just molting. Most of the adult birds are at this time of the year....they are done breeding...no need for the males to look pretty to attract a female, and many migrants are molting their old feathers so they will grow fresh ones for their long flight south, which are about to start for many species.

I think "birdgirl" has it exactly right. Most of the cards around my feeder look pretty ratty too. I think it's the stress of caring for the babies. But if they're totally bald, as you say, that sounds rather dramatic. My pet chickens bully lower-ranking hens by plucking out head and neck feathers, but there's probably no connection.

If it is mainly the females it could be a breeding thing. If it is all the birds it is probably some time of mite or other skin irritation. It could be an allergic reaction to some of the things in/around the feeders they frequent.

oh , i hope they didnt get into some contaminated food stuff/ like insecticide sprayed plants or poisoned food of some type/ i mean cause most birds molt, during warm climates/ but i never heard of *bald birds* and a flock of them at one time:)
