i think they put them in the DMV handbook. If your signals aren't working I a driver would like to know when your turning. I have see people actually do it and I'm sure you won't get a ticket for at least trying to let others know, so please do.

Turn signals have been required on cars since 1954. There aren't many drivers left who know what you're DOING when you use hand signals. I haven't seen anyone use a hand signal since before square headlights came out in 1975.

So if a tail light burns out, FIX IT right away as an important safety item, don't try to skate by with hand signals for a while.

I"m in Western Canada, and I know that you have to know your hand signals during your drivers test otherwise it's an automatic fail. It's required specifically if your signal lights are out, etc.

Good point! I had to learn that stupid stuff in drivers ed, too. I agree with the other poster-there are probably only 5 of us who remember how to signal for a left turn. The rest are drying their manicure or something.

You can use hand signals, but they aren't a legal substitute for non-working lights.

Who told you not to use hand signals? If it was a police officer, just believe them. It's best.

As far as I know, that's exactly what your supposed to do, though.

...Other than have your taillights fixed, at least.

we can use them if the car is so old that it was made before signals existed, but if it is capeable of using signals then it's the law to use them and if they're broken you have to get them fixed!

I'm surprized that you were told this, as it is in most driver's handbooks...Where did you get that information?
