Or is it an acceptable way to control your sex drive from time to time as need be? I don't believe in promiscuity certainly.

Masturbation is viewed differently in different cultures and religions. Some such as Catholocism see it as a sin, whilst others believe it is a manner to bring a person to a closer state of spirituality.

It is best to ask your clergyperson or religious leader for the views in your religion. It is interesting to note that the former Surgeon General actively recommended masturbation, which may have contributed to her being removed from the post.

it depends on how religious you are, or what your religion is--ulitmately if you are going to go word for word from the bible, then yes it is a sin, but not necessarily a deadly one. God will forgive anyone's sins...but this doesn't mean to go out and repetitiviely sin thinking you will be forgiven.
the reason WHY masturbation is a sin, is that, for a man, he is "spilling his seed onto the ground". i.e. you are wasting life that could be made. it happend in the old testament...don't remember the particular story though, but God was pretty mad at the guy who did it(he was supposed to have sex with his wife's slave to make a baby, but he didn't want to, so he pulled out and "his seed" was spilled on the ground..pretty interesting story actually).
however, in my eyes i think it is ok. as long as you aren't lusting after someone while doing it, then i don't think it is a terrible thing.
hope that helps clarify a few things for you. ;-)

To the whack jobs in here it is. Anything but missionary, in the dark, and only for procreation is a sin, but don't ask about the preists touching little boys...

the only sin you are guilty of is the sin you think you have committed.
I'd rather see priests beat their meat than the alterntive.

And it's not a "perversion". That's subjective.

I guess not
It is better than having sex before marriage
My religion allows us to do that
Because sperm must be taken out from us, it is produced all time, and if it is not taken out it may cause harm to us.
No sin of doing that. As long as we do it properly.

Touching yourself is a great way to go to Hell! Do not take pleasure from anything of the Earth, including your own body, for this is the domain of Satan. You would be better off to lop that thing off or just put a bullet in your brain, sinner.

Depends on your view of Onan.

If you view Onan's story as a tale warning against spilling your seed, then it is a sin.

If you view Onan's story as a tale warning against disobeying God, then it isn't necessarily a sin.

I haven't seen anything Biblical speaking out against masturbation. Not that it matters, since the Bible isn't a good source of morals.

After all, if it doesn't hurt anyone or God, how can masturbation be a sin?

It's not the act itself that is considered the sin. It's the thoughts that go with the act, usually.

I truely don't think so. I am a devoted Christian and I feel that is not a sin, because it's not two people doing that, only one.

One of the sons of Yehuda, son of Jacob, did it, and he was killed. He was called "Onen" in hebrew which is the past tense of masturbation. So I suppose it is?

Oh and by the way it was even given as the reason he died.
