Definitely the middle, unless you have two then you don't have much choice. The middle is furthest away from any glass or metal that might get pushed in.

The safest place for a car seat is the middle of the back seat, but only if it can be securely installed there. The middle seat is the safest place in the car because it is furthest from any impact, front, rear and most importantly side, which is the deadliest. If you cannot get a secure install in the center, then you should move the car seat to the passenger side rear seat. The passenger side of the vehicle is slightly safer than the driver's side. Just remember that many older vehicles only have lap belts in the middle rear seats which are fine for installing car seats, but should never be used with a booster seat. If using a booster seat, a lap/shoulder belt must be used.

Ideally it should be in the center of the backseat, unless the seat requires the use of a shoulder harness.Otherwise it should be behind the passenger seat. The passenger side of the car is closest to the sidewalk if you are parking on the street. You wouldn't believe how many times I've seen some bonehead open up the back drivers side door and let their toddler come out onto the busy street.Don't they realize how quickly that child could get out of their grasp and right in front of a moving car?The worst are the ones with the minivans that just open the door and let their youngster jump out onto the street. No brains.

I also say passenger side--because the child might like to kick your seat. I know mine does!
In my minivan I have my son in the middle row, passenger-side seat (I have quad seats in the middle). That way it's easier for him to get in and out. He has a belt-positioning booster, which requires a shoulder harness, so back bench in the middle is not a good idea. But if you have a car seat that can use just the lap belt, then by all means, middle.
In my husband's car, back seat, passenger side--same reason.

For the safest positioning, all car seats should be placed in the middle back seat, away from windows and doors. However, if more than one carseat is placed in the back seat, one hsould definitely be in the middle (most likely the youngest) and the other(s) on the side(s). This way the windows, if possibly shattered, or the doors, caved in, etc, cause less harm to the child.

Right side. Behind the passenger's seat. So the driver can turn their head to look at the child. Especially, if you have a small child who is going to kick the back of the seat or throw things.
If the one responsible for the child is in the passenger's seat, then the child may better off behind the driver.
