By whose standards?

The Lutherans are followers of founder Martin Luther. He was a Catholic priest until he posted his 95 thesis on the door of the Cologne Cathedral in 1500-something. He questioned the Catholic practice of "indulgences" --amoung other things the Church bureaucracy was doing,-- which meant that sins were forgiven most readily when money was donated to the Church. This meant the rich could commit more crimes, and ultimately be forgiven. In short, he questioned the motive of the church bureaucracy on alot of its practices that blatantly were shady and self-serving. This pis sed off the church personnel who were easily benefiting from these policies, and they took it personally. He questioned the church at a time when the church had the power to kill.
However, Luther was excommunicated for not recending his point of view.
So he renouced the Catholic faith, and started his own religion based on Jesus and the bible, and a movement called "Protestantism." Since then, Catholics have been taking quite a hit for their philosophy and many splinter groups followed suit. Calvanism and Baptists are just two groups that evolved from protestantism.
I hope this helps.

It's sad in a way, but it gets complicated here. Not all Lutheran Churches have the same doctrine, neither do all Baptist Churches.

They are not closer to original doctrine than the Baptist, in fact both are way-way off. First, don't believe anything you hear and only half of what you see. Don't believe me, don't believe your parents, don't believe preachers, don't believe anyone when it concerns God. Believe only the Bible.
Second please go on line to the following, all of them have hordes of books and booklets with answers to any question you can ask about God and the Church. All the books and booklets are FREE_FREE_FREE.

I've been in both churches....Baptists tend to revolve around social activity and not focus on the right things....hence, the hypocricy....Lutherans tend to take their spirituality more seriously and not be as "pot luck-dinner" and "youth organization", etc.--oriented....makes a difference.►◄●►

that is what some may say; but truth be told both religions you mention here are far from what God wants... just read what He says concerning the Nicolaitans in the book of revelation. he actually says He hates those ways, and yet, most of the churches today are set up in such a way.

because I do believe Lutherns are still kinda a part of the Catholic church, look up the Nicene Creed.

Lutherns arent a part of the catholic church, I think they are just an emulation of what Luther thought the church should be like with out the corruption (16th century catholic church was corrupt...)
