I have naturally curly hair that has always been frizzy, dry and hard to manage. But what's strange is close to my scalp, and about the first 3 to 4 inches is extremely healthy. It's been this way for...well, not really sure when it started. Once it gets to a certain length it starts...I guess drying out, not real sure. Sorry I'm not making much sense (been on the puter most of the day and my brain is fried) A little history about me:
31 years old, smoker, I don't drink as much water as I should (don't know if that makes a difference), as I said, very curly hair, we live in an area that has hard water, and I do take fairly hot showers. I use Suave humectant shampoo and conditionerever other day to every three days, and leave the conditioner in for about 3 minutes.
Am I doing it all wrong? What can I do to get my hair looking healthier?
Thanks in advance.

Ok to start
1) drinking makes a difference, if your not well hydrated, you hair won't be either.
2)you can get filters at the store or online to soften your water, which makes a big diffrence.
3)try to not wash your hair as much because it strips away your natural oils. Olive oil is great for you hair by the way.
4) you should try a different shampoo and conditioner. Go to www.naturallycurly.com. They have everything you need, plus product reviews.
5) I use the product line, Blended Beauty, for curly hair( I am African American). which doesn't strip the hair of its natural oils. They have everything you can think for frizz and managability.

first of all should drink More water.
Anyways, U shouldn't wash ur hair that much. Try 2-3 times a week. Find some moisturizer with fizz control recommended by ur stylist. Then u may want to consider Vitim to help grow ur hair.Last but not least... Well okay this is just a suggestion u have the choice to do this or not. If u have long hair u may need to cut a couple of inches off because you ends might be bad and that's probably why your first3-5 inches of hair is good. I mean that's what i had to do.

The hair closer to your scalp gets the natural oil from your scalp.Go to a beauty supply store and get a natural brissle brush and use it a couple times a week at night or before you shower.Never use it on wet hair. That brush will help pull the oil from your scalp to your ends.you can also use a moisturizing shampoo and conditioner. You can also use a reconstructer cap.You just put it on moist hair and put a cap over it and leave it on for an hour. The people at the supply store will help you.Theres public beauty supplies like Sally's .There fairly cheap.Dont use hot oils.Usa a better product with your shampoos and conditioners they dont have to be expensive either theres much better products out there than suave.Theres garner fructos and assie and freeman.I dont use any of those but if I couldnt get to my supply store to get what I used and have to go the grocery store for it those would be the one I would look at.

Smoking might be a cause as it can cause baldness and premature aging. You might try to quit smoking, drink more water and ask your doctor about pre-natal vitamins, as they encourage hair and fingernail growth. Pre-natal vitamins are not for everyone - be sure to discuss with your doctor. Hard water actually is loaded with minerals and can be good for you.

Check to see if there is any alcohol in your hair products - a lot of hair products are alcohol based and this can cause the dryness.

I've attached an article below which mentions the baldness and graying.

i'm just like you with the hair situation. i had my hair permed back in february and again in june and my hair is very frizzy and dry now too. the funny thing is when my hair was straight it was very healthy and wasn't dry and brittle like it is now. so i think it is the curls that affect the health of our hair. try using sleek it comes in a orange bottle. my sister uses that and it really helps cut down on the frizz i just haven't had the chance to get and get it myself. have you ever thought about straightening your hair and see if your hair is any healthier being straight??

prob the reason why the first few inches it looks good is because you have long hair and the weight of the hair is pulling on it. chances are if u cut it short u would have that same problem.
