each month lasts 29 or 30 days (there's no set order- we just go according to a calendar set by Hillel- a very smary Jewish scholar). the months are:
tishrei, cheshvan, kislev, tevet, shevat, adar, nissan, iyyar, sivan, tamuz, av and elul. tishrei is approximately around the beginning of october. right now its around the middle of Av.

It is a lunar calendar, so the months are 29.5 days. The day begins at sunset. If there is another day before the new moon on the 29th, that month has 30 days. The 13th month takes the place of "leap day" in the modern calendar. These required a bit of skill for the ancients to handle since they had to identify equinox or solstice to know if there would be 13 months in a given year. I can't imagine calculations like that with the methods of measuring time that were known at the time... sun dial or egg timer ;-)
