That sounds funny, I'm sure, but my dog--he's 1 1/2 yrs--digs in the cat litter box with his face. It's so gross. It makes his breath stink, and it scatters the litter on the floor. We've tried moving the litter box to a very inconspicuous place, but he gets it whenever he has a chance. The thing is, he knows it's bad. When he comes out of the room after doing it, he sneaks around with his tail tucked ... Any training/discipline suggestions?

Ask your vet about Forbid. It's a powder made specifically for ure problem. Basically you sprinkle it in the cat's food, and it makes the cat's poop real nasty (as if it isn't already eh?). Anwyays if your clinic has it they can give you the details and let you know how to use it and when it becomes effecting ect ect. Again its called Forbid.

I have had this problem too. Our 1 year old dog thinks its almond rocca. I have had to physically block the doors shut so that the crack in the door is just big enough for the cat to get through and so far our dog hasn't tried to push his way through, if you have a small dog that may not work. Maybe put a baby gate up that the cat is willing to jump over but your dog can't get over. Or you can hide and wait for him to go to the litter box and spray him with a squirt bottle as he is chowing down it that may help stop this habit. There is a product called Forbid that you could get at the vet and feed to the cat so that its poop has a foul bitter taste that would keep your dog away- ask your vet about it, I think its safe for cats, we give it to dogs all the time that eat their own poop and it works great. The last answer (Meatpies) mentioned the automatic scooping litter box and that is a great idea too. Good luck!

Excellent question! Both of my dogs do it and they know it's bad too. The only thing that has even slowed them down is the litter box is the covered kind and I put up barriers around the box so the cats can easily get in and out but the dogs (large) can't get in. Good luck!

Keep in mind that what we smell as "stinky" is something totally different for dogs and their heightened sense of smell. This is quite common, from what I hear. You may not be able to train his nose from smelling something that strong. It may not be strong to you, but there are a thousand scents in cat poop that can attract a dog.
There is an automatic litter box that you can purchase that will actually scoop the cat box right after your cat uses it. The dog can't eat the poop if it's not there, right?
Look online for automatic litter boxes.

When you feed your cat, mix in some pumpkin or meat tenderizer with the food to make it taste really bad to them, but if you cat won't eat it or it won't work, just keep the litter box in a room that the cat can acess, but the dog can't. Trust me, It can turn into a really bad habit of he keeps eating it, and it'll be hard to break.

Buy an enclosed litter box. Or better yet one of those Litter Maid boxes that scoops the poop for you.

I hate when my dogs get in the litter box too. I take them outside, tie them up so they can't move, turn the hose on, and spray their mouths out for awhile. Eventually they quit doing it since they now know the consequences. Try that.

Put a child gate up at the entrence to the room the cat box is in. Leve some space for the cats to get into th room, but not enough for the dog to get in.

wow this is a rare thing to hear about. if your cats can jump high you should put it up on a bookcase or lock the dog out of the room with the litter box and cage him up until he learns the real meaning of "no."

Danika,
My mother in law had the same problem. She went to Wal Mart and bought some spray that they have there. It is in the pet section and is called "train off" or something like that and you spray it everywhere you want your dog to stay away from. The odor bugs them and they stay away from it. Its like 5 bucks- so an easy fix. Good luck
