The two times I've made this trip, I've gotten stuck in some really bad traffic jams for hours - anyone have some good alternate routes or other strategies for avoiding bad traffic? Thanks.

I'm not sure where you are coming from in DC but if you can get to 95 South past Springfield. There is Route 1 that you can take and it will get you away from the 95 traffic, however, it's not always the best either. You can also get on 301 out of DC area (I believe Branch Ave (5) can take you to 301 and then 301 runs into 95 down around Carmel Church.

Contact me if you want other options, but depending on your time...I would say Route 1 is your best option.

I've been this way once before and the time wasn't much different from sitting in traffic on I-95.

Take US 29 West to VA 28 South to US 29 South. Go past US 17 and Remain on US 29 South. VA 28 is 2-Lane with 40-50 MPH speed limit and passes farms once you get out of Manassas. US 29 is 4 lane divided with 55 MPH speed limit and a handful of traffic lights.

US 29 South to Culpeper - take US 522 South. 2 lane with 55 mph speed limit, but goes through a couple of small towns.

Take US 33 East - takes you into downtown Richmond.

There are two optional routes depending on where you are coming from.

(1) From Tysons Corner:
Take US 29S toward Warrenton to US 17S. US 17S intercepts with I-95 around Fredericksburg. From there I-95 to Richmond.

(2) From Alexandria area:
US 1 runs parallel to I-95. When I encounter portions that are heavy in traffic, I usually take US 1 until traffic clears. There are more stoplights, but at least traffic does move.

95 is always crowded on a sunday. Especially in the summer. I've taken the 636 to avoid the mixing bowl, there's always the 1 but that can be crowded too. There's not a whole lot of other options however
