When you die you are asleep in the grave until Jesus returns and takes you to Heaven. You don't go to Heaven or Hell when you die. This is what Jesus and the Bible teaches.
"And this is the will of him that sent me, that every one which seeth the Son, and believeth on him, may have everlasting life: and I will raise him up at the LAST DAY."
John 6:40
No man can come to me, except the Father which hath sent me draw him: and I will raise him up at the LAST DAY.
John 6:44
Whoso eateth my flesh, and drinketh my blood, hath eternal life; and I will raise him up at the LAST DAY.
John 6:54
Jesus saith unto her, Thy brother shall rise again. Martha saith unto him, I know that he shall rise again in the resurrection at the LAST DAY.
John 11:23-24
He that rejecteth me, and receiveth not my words, hath one that judgeth him: the word that I have spoken, the same shall judge him in the LAST DAY.
John 12:48
And as it is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment
Hebrews 9:27
The order: death – resurrection - judgment- Heaven or Hell
If you go directly to Heaven wouldn't you be praising and thanking God? Yet the Bible Says
Psalms 115:17 The dead praise not the Lord.
In order to understand death we have to let the Bible speak for itself which is why In the following answer there is a text to back every statement
I was listening to a sermon recently in which the pastor talked about this subject. Talking about death we should look at how life was created
And the Lord God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul. - Genesis 2:7
From this we see that the soul is the combination of both the breath of God and the physical body.
So what happens when you die?
1) In the sweat of your face you shall eat bread till you return to the ground, for out of it you were taken; for dust you are, and to dust you shall return.- Genesis 3:19
2) And when Jesus had cried with a loud voice, he said, Father, into thy hands I commend my spirit: and having said thus, he gave up the ghost. - Luke 23:46
3) Then the dust will return to the earth as it was, and the spirit will return to God who gave it. - Ecclesiastes 12:5
From these scriptures we see that when you die the two components of the soul either decay (the physical body) or goes back to God (the spirit)
Many people believe that the spirit is some intangible ghostlike substance but if you look at what the bible says
All the while my breath is in me, and the spirit of God is in my nostrils - Job 27:3
From this we see that the spirit is the Breath of Life not a … ghost (for lack of a better word)
Do the dead go directly to heaven or hell?
Psalms 115:17 The dead praise not the Lord.
Psalms 6:5 In death there is no remembrance of thee.
Isaiah 38:18 Death can not celebrate thee.
Psalms 146:4 His thoughts perish.
Job 21:32 Yet shall he be brought to the grave, and shall remain in the tomb.
Ecclesiastes 9:5 For the living know that they shall die; but the dead do not know anything, nor do they have any more a reward; for their memory is forgotten.
From these verses we see that there is no thought in death
Some may argue that these are all Old Testament examples of the teaching of death so let’s look at the New Testament
Jesus speaking about the death of Lazarus
These things said he: and after that he saith unto them, Our friend Lazarus SLEEPETH; but I go, that I may awake him out of SLEEP. Then said his disciples, Lord, if he sleep, he shall do well. Howbeit Jesus spake of his death: but they thought that he had spoken of taking of rest in sleep. Then said Jesus unto them plainly, Lazarus is dead. John 11:11-14
Matthew 27:52 And the graves were opened; and many bodies of the saints which SLEPT arose
1 Thessalonians 4:15 But I would not have you to be ignorant, brethren, concerning them which are ASLEEP, that ye sorrow not, even as others which have no hope.
1 Thessalonians 4:14 Them also which SLEEP in Jesus will God bring with him.
If we look at what Jesus said on the cross in Luke 23:43
And Jesus said to him, Assuredly, I say to you, today you will be with Me in Paradise.
Many use this to prove the point that we go directly to our reward. The problem is in the Greek there was not a comma, the comma was placed centuries later by people who believed that we go directly to our reward. If you move the comma it conforms to the rest of scripture
And Jesus said to him, “Assuredly, I say to you today, you will be with Me in Paradise.”
Read what happens on Sunday morning and Jesus tells Mary he did not ascend to heaven yet.
But doesn’t the Bible say to be absent from the body is to be present with the Lord?
As I mentioned above the Bible says we do not go directly to heaven or hell. I think we should look at 2 Corinthians 5, but rather than only looking at verse 8 lets look at the whole chapter in order to gain better perspective. If you read the whole text we see Paul talking about three states of being. In chapter 1 Paul writes 1) our earthly house {our earthly bodies} 2) a building of God, an house not made with hands, eternal in the heavens {glorified bodies}. In verse 3 he says 3) naked.
The question to ask is when do we get our glorified bodies?
1 Corinthians 15:51 says we get them at the last trumps when Christ returns proving we do not go directly to heaven upon death.
If we go directly to heaven or Hell when we die then there is never a time when we are “naked” (not existing on earth or in Heaven)
Let’s look at what Peter said in Acts chapter 2
Men and brethren, let me freely speak unto you of the patriarch David, that he is both dead and buried, and his sepulchre is with us unto this day.
Acts 2:29
For David is not ascended into the heavens
Acts 2:34
But what about Moses and Elijah on the Mount of Transfiguration.
The Bible tells us how they got to Heaven, Moses was resurected according to Jude 9
And Elijah was taken to heaven in a fiery chariot 2 Kings 2:11
If you read the Bible you see that when you die you sleep in the grave until Jesus returns

Absolutely nothing, your conscience self at the moment of death just simply ceases to exist. The empty body will go through chemical and biological decay, but you as you, your thoughts ,your feelings, your hopes , your fears, even your dreams and your sense of you will will just smply end.
Religious people go through life with the hope (faith) that there is more, this is simply not true, there has been no proof, (and never will be), that there is a heaven or hell, or Islam, etc. or something more to go on to.
There is also no so called higher plain as some other non religious people think, as again it has never been, (and again never will be), proven.
I'm sorry to say it but, for you and all of us, after death there is nothing.
Life is short, get it right, because believe me there are no second chances.

This all hinges on the concept of something that can survive your physical death - commonly referred to as a 'soul'.
What exactly could a soul be? What properties does it have? What part of 'you' resides in the soul?
If it's postulated that consciousness, or awareness, or sense of self resides in the soul, it's difficult to see how this can be reconciled with the complete oblivion which accompanies general anaesthesia. How could a straightforward chemical, injected into the bloodstream, anaesthetise a soul so that it effectively ceases to exist during this time? If consciousness, in the form of a soul, were some kind of supernatural faculty, it would seem implausible that it could be completely disabled by a chemical.
How about some of the other things which we regard as essential parts of what makes a person what they are? How about love, compassion, reason, empathy, memory, conscious thought, character, 'spirituality' and so on? Well, there is really no plausible doubt that all these things are properties of the physical brain. We can alter all of these properties very simply with alcohol or other drugs, and observe how they change in people who have suffered significant brain damage - Previously placid people become uncontrollably violent, intelligent people become imbeciles, and so on. Stimulate the brain artificially, and the subject reports corresponding mental activity, e.g. 'religious experiences'. We can see from brain research that all these things - thought, emotion, sensation, character traits and so on - are correlated with activity in the brain, and some things can be identified with specific areas of the brain.
So, if all these faculties and characteristics of what we regard as the 'person' reside in the physical brain, as seems to be undeniably the case, and they all cease when the person dies, then what is left to be attributed to a 'soul'? As far as I can ascertain: Nothing. If there is no part of us that can continue after death, then there is no 'afterlife'... and if there is no afterlife, then most of religion is null and void.

If you believe in the word of God as truth Then when we expire we will all face "judgement" for all our deeds whether they be good or evil. If you have accepted The Lord as your savior and believe that God sent his son into the world and he led a sinless life to be a cover for the sins we have (because we arent perfect) and you had this faith then you will "have a new body and your soul will forever be with the Lord". God also is a jealous God which means he has given us all the chance to receive him. If you chose not to do so then the Bible says he will say "depart from me I never knew you" meaning in short that you will be cast out of his presence eternally. Why would a loving God do this? God does love us all but does not condone sin. After all he gave us an escape. I know it is difficult to imagine eternity in any location but our life is But a vapor it is here for a little time then gone the Bible says. Prepare for the afterlife. Study Gods Word. (new testement John , and Thesselonians and revelation) Good luck

That really is a tough one. It depends on what you believe. When I was young I was told that when people died they went to heaven but I knew I could see and speak to dead people so I thought that heaven didn't exist. As I grew up I could still communicate with the dead so heaven was a distant memory. But now I think its down to your own personal beliefs. Believe what makes you feel good. You have to deal with death in your own way. I know you probably think I'm crackers, maybe I am, but hopefully I have helped you, even if its just a little bit . Take care xxx

If you ever had an operation where you were fully anaesthisised you would understand it...It is the point where your brain and thinking stop existing...you dont feel sleeping, just a gap which you never feel.
This is death, you dont think or feel your self existing. It is difficicult to imagine this, because we think of ourselves as everlasting entities but this is the way it is done. Some fairy tale believers will talk about heaven and hell...dont get them wrong..they are like kid that get into drugs to escape reality..

The body dies but the spirit lives on. If your a Christian your last breath in the flesh is your first breath in eternity with Christ. If you are not a Christian you will have to face the White Throne Judgement at the end of the Millennium.

No, there is no one who can truly answer this, but don't worry - everyone has and will face death, it is the only thing you can be certain of! I believe that death will be a similar experience to birth -in that it will be inconceivable to translate and that it will be the start of a new "life". But do not concern yourself with death... Make the most of life and deal with death when it comes.

Believe it or not, you have complete control over that. you can choose to accept Jesus as your savior, and repent of your sins, and invite Jesus into your heart and give Him the control of it and go to heaven. Or you can stay the property of satan and not turn to Jesus to rescue you from the bondage of satan's chains over your soul and your eternal destination. The choice is all yours.
I pray that you make the right choice. You see, you are not promised that you will wake up in the morning. None of us are. All we have is right here and right now. But what we do with our right here and now could make the difference as to where your soul goes when you die. You might get hit head on in a car crash and get killed, or get sick with something and die from that. You dont know how or where you will die, but you can make sure as to where you will go when you died. I pray you make the right chocie and choose to accept Jesus as your savior today.
And by the way... just being good will not get you into heaven. Only acceptance of Jesus as your savior will.
John 14:6 Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.

No, but just imagine how you would experience it.
a. plane is crashing, you realise it, and just before moment of impact there is flash, no pain even - and like sleeping in - mind switches off.
b. ill - slow ending of life, saying bye to all, forgiving being forgiven - happy feeling - sleep in.
c. killed, without realising - life ends, sleep in.
etc..
In any case, better to die while we are still alive - i mean, we must realise life can end at any moment, therefore to be in peace with our environment and ourselves. End of life should be like reaching the top of a mountain - happyness we did it ! Unhappy if we feel frustrated at life end.
What survives after death are our soul, our thoughts, friends, creations. So, to survive, lets create, lets love, do.. !

No
If they tell you they can, they're lying.
The truth is that nobody "knows" what happens after life ends: some believe one thing and some another, but nobody objectively "knows". They will, however, try to force beliefs upon you in a variety of ways.
Be critical.
And ask for proof.
