GM has a self driving car in the works, unfortunately they chose the most understeering piece of plop that they could, a Vectra. While the sport version is fast, the car has notoriously bad handling(like it won't turn when you want it to). This may change with the 2008 model they plan to put the self driving system in, but I doubt that. I imagine the car will drive like the most cautious old lady you've ever met, but there has to be some give and take. It is also likely that the car will be released in Europe long before it sees American soil because we Americans like to sue people for almost anything. So I'm sure they'll have to create a whole new set of laws for these types of vehicles. I wonder what effect these cars will have on insurance rates and the liability drivers are required to undertake. I personally dread the day all cars have auto pilots. I love to drive and they can take away my prerogative when they pry the steering wheel from my cold dead hands.

With GPS becoming standard on cars, do you think they will ever make a car that drives itself?
Since I am a tecchie, I have seen hundreds of self driven cars since 1965. There is a competition each year to have self-driving cars, sponsored by teams around the world, in the california Baha.
The military sponsors self-driven vehicle competitions in the
U.S. on a regular basis. This is not "future" tech, but big
business, right here, right now.
ALL auto manufacturers have experimental vehicles, and some
city/state/country government organizations have built various
test roads around the world to experiment with urban vehicles that
drive themselves.
If you are physically handicapped, there are dozens of add-on devices that you can purchase to control the brakes, gas and
steering on any vehicle, commanded by your voice.
Thus your question, WILL they ever, is actually, they already have.
What is missing is a PRODUCTION vehicle, that is mass-marketed, and successful.
In Germany and Japan, and
a few other countries, there are HUGE projects to get vehicles automated, so that in " selected " areas, you will see vehicles that
are totally self- driving, in 10 years or so. These will be the test platforms for world wide acceptance and production.
How about self driving, FLYING vehicles that use time/space
propulsion, in 11 dimensions ( not the primitive 4 dimensions that
we now use ? ) Once the 11 dimensions are understood, then
we can utilize them to travel in straight lines thru space... with
very little energy... ( gravity sucks , so eliminated it ).
For the new physics of 11 Dimensional space, the world's most brilliant physicist, and the only person actually doing experiments in 11 dimensions,

Ed WItten ( earth's smartest man )
M Theory
Stringy Universe,
CERN, Large hadride Collider
and John Hutchinson, the Hutchinson Effect ( 11 D experimenter )
In the meantime, only a few cities will have roadways with self driven cars, in selected " commuter passages ". Eventually,
all vehicles, whether ground or "flying" will have autopilots.

Actually they did many years ago - but only on a test track.
In mass production, no. The legal liabilities are too great.
Winnebago was once sued by a driver whose motor home crashed after he left the driver's seat unattended to make a cup of coffee in the kitchen. Winnebago lost in court.
