Damage Controlman(DC) in the Coast Guard???

Question

My brother wants to be a Damage Controlman(DC). Is there a 3 year enlistment?

And will this rate help for a career as a welder? I know they do more than welding, that is why i ask if it will even help for a career as a welder.

Actually if he's interested in welding & construction, The Navy Seabee's or Army Engineers seem like a better place to start. That is their primary function! Not to nock the USCG, but if that is his long term goal he's starting in a odd way. Most enlistments are 4 years, more advance ones are 6.
