First, take some pain medicine each time you go into the dentist if needed. They will nto hurt getting put on but afterwards they will.
Put wax on them if they are rubbing your cheeks, just pinch a little piece off and put it on the wire or bracket taht is bothering you.
Get a dental pick to get food out of your braces.
Do not get glow in the dark elastics or o-rings because the glow stuff will get on your teeth and like stain them.
HOpe this helps any. Good luck with the braces.

seriously do not eat the things on the list of foods not to eat...if you break a bracket off...IT HURTS! (personal experience)
that's too bad it has to be for so long, but when you're done and have beautiful teeth it will be worth it...i remember the day i got mine off--it was a good day :)
OH make sure you brush your teeth VERY well...since you aren't able to brush under the bracket...when they come off, if you haven't taken the best care of your teeth they can look spotty/stained.
*edit* Almost forgot! WEAR YOUR RETAINER after they come off!!! WEAR IT!! If you don't...they will revert back to the way they were and you'll have to straighten them all over again!

Don't wear clear braces. They either make it obvious that you have them on (and that your ashamed of it), or that you have bumps all over your teeth. Also, to look great, see if you can have colored braces and rubber bands. Also, don't over brush your teeth. Then when your braces get off, there will lbe a trail of slightly different colored teeth.

Take pain reliever before you get them on, and when getting them tightened.

keep wax handy to put on so they don't cut the inside of your mouth!
