Just wanted to clear up some wrong info here...lots of people told you it is tapeworms...which is correct, but they do NOT get them from flea bites..they get them from ingesting a flea. So, yes you need to treat the cat for fleas as well or it could re-infect itself over and over again. Also, someone said this was an worm egg....wrong again. What you are seeing is a small segment of a much longer worm inside your cats body. Droncite or Drontal is the correct medicine to treat tapeworms. Vet can prescribe them or you can get them online.

There are worms and worms. This sounds like tapeworms to me and they come from fleas.
Droncit is specific to the tape worm. I do not know if this is available in a pet store. You DO NOT give wormers indiscriminately. Droncit is usually a one-time pill so you are not in too much danger of hurting your cat. You must have your cat protected from the flea bites, with Advantage or something good like that. The cat or dog is necessary to the life cycle of this worm and is carried to your animal by the flea bite. Again don't do this OTC because overdosing can be fatal.
You can buy the OTC drugs because vets have found them to be:
1. ineffective
2. detrimental to the animal's health or fatal is not used properly

Hi Jack...these sesame-like bugs are called tapeworms. You can purchase over the counter deworming meds. It's not uncommon if your cat goes outside as parasites live in the soil so when grooms himself he ingests the larvae. If the over the counter dewormer hasn't been effective then a visit to your vet can quickly remedy this as well. You may want to just ring your vet to discuss the tapeworms just in case your cat may be infected with stronger type of parasite.

Intestinal parasites.
There are over the counter remedies but most either don't work are are the wrong dosage.
Take you cat to the vet.
*jbean, you have a sick pet so you just dump them? Thanks for making my job sooo much easier. I work at a shelter. I still think some people shouldn't be allowed pets, they obviously have no clue and dump them as soon as the pet is inconvienent.

white rice looking worms are tapeworms. They get them from fleas. You need to get a dewormer MADE for tapeworms. Call your vet and get one from him/her. Most over the counter dewormers do not take care of tapeworms
