Let's say you are 5'0 and weigh 400 pounds. A 1/4K isn't going to look as large as a 4K.
However, if you're 5'0 and weigh 100 pounds, 4K will look outragous.
Are you buying the ring for others to notice, or for your girlfriend to enjoy? Also don't buy something that will cause you to go bankrupt. Instead, go small now and get her a larger diamond later. Think about that.
I have a 1/4K, and I think that it looks great. I have really small hands, so it fits my personality, my lifestyle, and me.

I really am not into "big" rings...or jewlery for that matter, however; after getting engaged I really have to say I LOVE my ring. I got to pick it out which was great.
I have a 1/4 round cut diamond with 2 smaller diamonds on the band on each side of the big one (5 total). These are small diamonds I know but when you look at it they look pretty big because of the setting. My diamonds are supported by posts so the whole diamond is exposed. If you want a diamond that really sparkes, that is the way to go because it gets the best light. I have my wedding band as well (we bought it because it was on sale) and it has diamonds in it as well. My preference is more, better quailty, nicely set diamonds, then one really big one.
just remember, the bigger it is the more it will get in the way when doing things:)

I like simple classic rings with no more than 3 dimonds. Anything more and it gets to be too gaudy. I think the size of the dimond depends on the setting and the womans hand. I could never pull off a 2 carat ring but my sister could make it look sleek and elegant.
Take a look at bluenile.com, they have some of the nicest setting I have seen. They are also less expensive than the traditional stores, plus there is no aggressive sales pitches and better quality.

Any size ring would be nice from the man you love if he picked it out himself. But if I was just looking, I'd say under 1/4 carat is too small and over 1 carat is too big. Mine is 1/2 and it's perfect.

The diamond size does not matter. Those that the diamond size matters are too materialistic and not in the marriage for the right reasons. I have a friend that wears a simple gold band. She has a beautiful marriage and each time I am with her and see her band it reminds me of how happy and in love she is.
Good luck!

I don't know much about karats but I think a good size is about 1 karat. um, it also depends on the cut. The princess cut squares look better smaller, as do the marquee cuts BUT a round cut looks better bigger. 1 or 2 karats is ok.

Who cares about everyone else. I say go for something with meaning. My fiance and I chose engagement rings for each other that meant something in particular. If it's just because other people will be jealous or impressed, it's not going to mean as much.
