I have an older sister and younger brother. I'm 18 and my brother is turning 12. My older sister is always at work, so I'm the one who has to clear off the table, do the dishes, and do other various chores around the house. My brother does absolutely nothing except sit on the computer or hang out with friends. He watches my mom while she cleans his room. No matter how hard I try, I can't seem to convince my parents that I should be getting help. Now that my sister is not there, I need more help and I think it's time for him to do that. He's perfectly capable. What is your opinion and what should I do?

I know some of you may tell me to get a job. I'm working on it, believe me.

Call a family meeting and lay your complaint at there feet I'm sure that you parents will understand your sister should be on your side because she once had you to help and knows how much is expected of you get your brother there as well because if it comes down and he wasn't there he will say you are just picking on him at twelve years of age I was expected to contribute in the house as much as my siblings. Tell your parents that its a good thing that your brother should be able to clean and cook one day in the not to distant future he will have to fend for himself its their job give some lucky woman a husband with good house skills .

I started doing chores when I was about 10 years old. I think your younger brother is perfectly capable of helping out. You guys should split the chores or take turns. You should tell your parents that you don't think it's fair that you have to do all the work and he gets to sit around doing nothing all day. Tell them that by doing chores he'll be getting some exercise instead of playing on the computer and killing brain cells.

I know what you are going through.. I have 2 younger sisters, one lives with me and my father. I am the one always doing the cooking and cleaning. I'm 24 years old so I have been doing this for years. I have become recently unemployed and my sister that lives with me goes to high school. I hear all the time that just cause she goes to school then she doesn't have to help out around the house. Well even when I was working and I came home at 11pm I still had to do laundry, dishes, and more..she never did anything.. that was untill I stoped doing her laundry and picking up after her. If you need any advice on what u are going through. get a hold of me..

Just do what you do and forget about him.

Your parents are trying so let them do their job. It's your job to do your share and you'll only get more aggravated by being jealous or thinking you're getting the $hit end of the stick.

Look at how well things are going outside of your family also. If you grow up and think people are just like how things are run in your house, THEN you have a problem. This is easy stuff compared to the real world. Get a hobby, go out with some friends, and have a fun time. W/e it takes to forget about how your brother gets off so easy.

There's nothing wrong with any child that age having chores!

Sounds alot like my brother...

I think the youngest boy gets a real easy ride. There's nothing wrong with building responsibility. Perhaps, you could tell your parents with school you can't handle so much and keep your grades up. Tell them this is what you can do and what you cannot. And, I would insist that chores be spread out amongst EVERYONE.

And, your parents aren't giving you a good example of treating people equally...

He definately should be helping out. I started doing chores when I was seven and by the time I was 12 I had a regular babysitting gig. He should clean his room, take out the trash, empty the dishwasher, etc. You should make a list and then have designated days that you all split the chores.

If he's lazy now, then it will be worse when he gets older.

My older kids are 8 and 10, and they have been age-appropriately helping out for years. They make their own lunches for school, they clean their own rooms, they help cook dinner, do most of their own laundry (with a little help from me), they help take out the trash, etc. etc. My 3-year old helps sort laundry and puts it in the washer. He also helps load and unload the dishwasher. We have all always looked at it as it's a family thing, and everybody helps out. I think it's long past time for your brother to be helping out.

Your brother should've been helping out a long time ago. As long as your parents sit on their hands, he's not going to budge.

Get yourself a job and make sure you're gone "at work" enough to help your parents see that he needs to pick up after himself.
