No, you may not have multiple US passports.

If you are worried about losing it or something, just make sure to always keep copies in a secure place.

However you may be able to apply for dual citizenship w/ another country and carry 2 (or more) passports. The US will not allow you to have dual citizenship with some countries (and likewise, some countries will not allow you to have dual citizenship with others). When applying for dual citizenship and a passport with the other countries you must work closely with their consulate and stay on top of the US rules and regs. This is great if you are foreign born and/or if you want to live/work somewhere else in the future.

I don't blame you for getting out quick and making doubly sure you have a passport. I reckon China or India will be your best bet.
