Sounds kind of vague question.

Only thing I can suggest is:
Right click on the file
Select properties
Check document opens with Microdoft office.

Sometimes if you try to open a spreadsheet as a word document, it opens as a weird looking bunch of symbols.

Can you provide a new question with detail of what the messages and document look like?

HISTORY: Software manufacturers don't want to fire their programmers. SSSOOOO, they come up with a new versions all the time. HOW TO SELL IT? Why, just come up with a different file format with each new version. Usually, the newer program will read the old file formats. But when one SAVEs, it automatically converts your data to the format used by this new version of the program.

Soon, most of those you communicate with will have the new version (with added features, of course). They can read your file. BUT: if they change the file, do a SAVE, and send it to you, you cannot use it with your old program.

WHAT TO DO: A. Buy the new version of the program (most expensive of my two answers, then you must install and test it).
B. Communicate with the person who modified your data file, and sent it back to you. Ask this person to please SAVE AS, and specify the older format. Lots of people won't know how to do this, and many of to those who do, don't want to take the time.

Hope this helps,
Skeeter
