I can see if the kid is in the way of other cars, that's bad. But there have been cases of kids being in the car first, and the car gets car jacked, with the kid in it.
I've heard it's better to wait until you're getting in the car to put the kid in.

you're overreacting a bit. people do that so they can see the child at all times. if you put the kid in the car first, then go about loading the groceries, who's watching the kid? worst case scenario, suppose that parent gets car jacked? if the kids in the car first, they're screwed, but if the kids in the cart then all they lose is a ride home and some groceries. it's not uncommon for this practice to occur. if the parent leaves the cart in the middle of the street then there's an issue here

well i guess it depends on a few things such as the weather if its raining I put my kids in the car before if its hot i keep them out of the hot car until i put the grocery cart away. Who are you to scold any parent, are you a perfect parent. Just because you don't agree with something doesn't make it right or wrong. Common sense tells me to do whats best for my kids too, but putting them in a hot car when temps read over 105 where i live and putting my grocery's away and walking away to put the cart away is not best. also my kids are never in front of on coming traffic.

It somewhat bothers me...but it's not your kids. Let the parents take care of and raise their kids however they want to. You never know, maybe they are scared the kids might end up locking the doors after they put them in or afraid the car might get stolen while they are putting the groceries and the children in the car...you never know. Whether its lack of common sense or a legitimate reason...you can't just go over and scold a stranger when you don't know why they are doing that. You want to go and ask them a question or help them out so that they'll finish up faster and get the kids in the car, fine...but you are out of line when you go up to a stranger and start sh*t

Granted, they should get the damn cart (occupied or not) out of the way of traffic, but I can see an argument in favor of groceries-first: the groceries may well contain frozen items that need to get out of the sun as soon as possible, and while the parent is loading, she at least knows where the kid is, who, it is to be hoped, will not melt in the sun.
Another reason is that the kid's screams (they are ALWAYS screaming about something) are slightly less annoying outdoors than in an enclosd space.

OMG that bothers me too. Last winter I was grocery shopping and it was freezing ( I live in the state of Maine) it gets really cold in the winter and this lady was loading in groceries and I am thinking gee, don't you put the child in the seat first and turn the car on and get some heat up in that vehicle? Hell that is what I do! She was hardly dressed appropriately in the first place. I even confronted her, she made no attempt to take care of the poor little girl first. I just don't understand that. I think more people should speak up when it comes to children, they have no rights it is sad.

However my common sense tells me otherwise.
I unload the groceries first, with my little kid on sight.
But I certainly try to get it out of the path of passing cars.

i see what u mean and u're not over-reacting. i leave my kids until last too cause i don't want them sitting in a hot car while i unload groceries, besides, it's a good way to keep an eye on them. i don't, however, leave them where they can get hit by a car. so common sense could tell them to at least get them out of the way of oncoming traffic.

I have seen people doing this. I know it is not true, but it makes it look as if they are putting the "most valuable" things in the car first. I see this all the time.

umm...yeah you are over reacting. Are you a psycho? is a better question. Just because you let your kids out of the cart doesn't mean you have to let them run recklessly out in the middle of the street.
