Ok, I think the best way is to meet spanish people (internet is a good way) and talk with them. They will be pleasant to teach you spanish words and to teach you everything you need. I'm sure you'll learn a lot! And spanish people will be proud to do it! I say it to you 'cause I'm spanish! ;)

this is how I learned French: school and took 4 years
this is how I learned English: practiced every day, radio, tv, news, work and books all in English took months
you see, people who have learned another language know how difficult it is and will NOT make fun of you but if you ask they will help, I have a standing arrangemetn with one of my friends who "speaks" spanish, if he corrects my english I will correct his spanish.
do you find people with accents interesting? well so do other people, they will find you iineresting, practice everyday all day that will get you ther fast

Claim asylum in Spain = free education, a free house, thousands of pounds worth of benefits.
No wait, thats what the UK does. Only you learn English.
Well, im outta ideas. You could try and claim asylum BACK into the UK. I mean, if you have that little money, surely you must be wearing rags.
Speak jibberish in a Russian-style accent and claim you are from Eastern Europe, they'll let you right in = free education, a free house, thousands of pounds worth of benefits.

your best bet is to immerse yourself into a community that speaks the language. hearing it everyday is really the only way to learn a language. if you have any friends that speak it, have them speak it exclusively to you.
there are several books you can get at any bookstore from dictionaries to verb conjugations. try to learn 10-20 new words a day.
good luck!

You could always move to California or any state that borders Mexico - there are plenty of signs/businesses/etc that are all in Spanish.
