Two professional tips:
1 keep onions in the fridge to keep the tear causing fumes heavier then the air around you.
2 Place a small fan nearby to blow the fumes away from you.

I have also heard you should breathe through your mouth so that your nose (part of the sinus family) isn't as irritated and also th keep bread in your mouth as you cut the onion.
The last two have no supporting facts, but the first two I practice in my own restaurant successfully.

I put the cutting board right next to the kitchen sink and turn the cold water on full blast and chop as fast as I can and make sure Ido not put my hands near my face. I wash my hands with soap and water after I am done chopping and get the onions cooking or out of my immediate range asap. Somehow the running water works to keep me from crying.

When you peel and cut the onion, breathe through your mouth. You won't have any tears. The only other way that I know is to wear contacts. Since I don't wear contacts, I just breathe with my mouth open and never cry. This works. I hope this helps.

Cut the onions under water or use glasses. Also there are small hand operated graters that do the job quickly under a cover.
The under water thing was recommended to a lady. When asked later how that worked for her she replied, 'Not too good, I couldn't hold my breath that long'. ;-)

Run it under cold water. Or while cutting the onion hold a soda (saltine) cracker in your mouth.

Those silly little swim goggles really do work, I've used them at home. When I cook fat work, I try to talk about the saddest country songs (#1 seems to be Teddy Bear) and my clients really think I'm sensitive. I figure it's good for the tear ducts.
