Unless your parents went to medical school, believe your DOCTORS. Your life depends on this. Those disorders are nothing to fool around with and are very treatable. But left alone they can kill you or rob you of the life you deserve.

If you are feeling suicidal then you need to immediately get help. You can call the suicide prevention hotline and they will get you help. http://www.suicidepreventionlifeline.org 1-800-273-TALK (8255).

If you are not suicidal then read on. It is not up to your parents to diagnose you. They are not qualified. If you have the feeling that you need to get help then there is something going on. If it is depression or BP disorder then a psychiatrist or psychologist is the only person who can correctly DX you. A good place to learn more is through the Depression and Bipolar Support Alliance. Here is the link

http://www.dbsalliance.org/

There is a lot of good information on this site as well as a couple of screening that you can look at to see if you fit the DX criteria.

There are also nationwide support groups which can really help in a crisis. .

I hope that this info has helped a bit. Good luck.

If you are still feeling anxious or depressed then it could be that you do need the medications. Doctors don't usually just give you those types of pills unless you really need them. Your parents just might be in denial about your condition or maybe they don't like pills. Either way, you should talk to your doctors and your parents and get back on the medication so you can start to feel better.

It sounds like your parents are in denial probably because they are afraid to admit to themselves and to other people that you have these things. Doctors are not evil and they don't diadnose you with something unless they truely believe that you have it. I think taking your meds will make you feel better, and I know you want to feel better. If you're still under 18 I would urge your parents to heed the doctors advice so you can live a normal life. However, if you're over 18 you can legally stand up for yourself and I would definately do that.

If you are in school, I would suggest talking to the school nurse or guidance counselor, and letting them know how you're feeling and what's going on. Also, if you are 18, you do not have to have your parents' permission to seek help - you can go to your local health department or emergency room (if you are feeling suicidal) and ask for help. There are also lots of online support groups and free phone numbers that you can call for assistance. There is help out there, and if you are still feeling anxious and depressed, you need to take the initiative and seek it out. Good luck and God bless. :)

If they don't trust the doctor, they should take you for a second opionion rather than just disregard the 1st doctors opinion. If you happen to live in the San Francisco bay area, I know some really good doctors that treat teen girls specifically.

Either way, I wish you the best of luck. Stay strong.

I would go with your parents, and I wouldn't take too seriously anything a psychiatrist has to say. Psychiatrists pretend to have authority, but it's a false authority as there is NO science to psychiatry. Psychiatric "diagnoses" are based on psychiatry's bible, the discredited Diagnostic and Statistical Manual (DSM).

Herb Kutchins of California State University, Sacramento, and Stuart A. Kirk of the University of California, Los Angeles, authors of Making Us Crazy: The Psychiatric Bible and the Creation of Mental Disorders write: “The developers of DSM assume that if a group of psychiatrists agree on a list of atypical [new] behaviors, the behaviors constitute a valid mental disorder. Using this approach, creating mental disorders can become a parlor game in which clusters of all kinds of behaviors (i.e. syndromes) can be added to the manual.”

Real doctors do tests, but NONE of the so-called "diseases" listed in the DSM can be confirmed by any type of medical test. In fact, psychiatrists simply vote new diseases into existence at their conventions -- "all in favor say aye," and if it wins a majority vote they have a new disease. However, "diseases" such as "depression," "bipolar" and "anxiety disorder" are not in fact biologically based "diseases" but rather normal human emotions.

Diabetes is a biochemical imbalance. However, as Harvard psychiatrist Joseph Glenmullen states, “the definitive test and biochemical imbalance is a high blood sugar balance level. Treatment in severe cases is insulin injections, which restore sugar balance. The symptoms clear and retest shows the blood sugar is normal. Nothing like a sodium imbalance or blood sugar imbalance exists for depression or any other psychiatric syndrome.”

In 1996, psychiatrist David Kaiser said, “...modern psychiatry has yet to convincingly prove the genetic/biologic cause of any single mental illness...Patients [have] been diagnosed with ‘chemical imbalances’ despite the fact that no test exists to support such a claim, and...there is no real conception of what a correct chemical balance would look like.”

Psychiatric drugs are very dangerous and thousands of people die from them. There are alternatives though. Most people that are labelled "mentally ill" in fact have an underlying physical ailment. Apparent "mental illnesses" can be caused by lead toxicity, toxic poisoning, allergies, a hormonal imbalance, a vitamin deficiency, an underactive thyroid or other reasons. You should get checked out by a competant medical doctor (not a psychiatrist) who will do a physical on you and a complete panel of blood tests. I was feeling depressed and anxious myself and I went to a good medical doctor who found (through a blood test) that I had some vitamin deficiencies and is now treating me with megavitamin therapy. A deficiency in vitamin B12 can cause depression while a deficiency in calcium can cause disorganized thinking, both apparent "symptoms" of "mental illness" but things that can in fact be remedied with supplements. You can find a good medical doctor who is well versed in finding the underlying causes of your feelings as well as treating it naturally at http://www.alternativementalhealth.com which is sponsored by an organization known as Safe Harbor.

Tell your parents that you still feel depressed and anxious, and want to see a psychologist. They may not want you to take medications, but they shouldn't be against you seeking help.

Your parents are probably thinking they are just protecting you. But bipolar is serious and its something that you cant help. Along with depression and the disorder. Its ok to need medicine and to get counseling from time to time. YOu need to make yourself happy. ANd better. If you feel sad, it doesnt have to be that way. You need to talk to someone you trust or school.
