We have hardwood floors in some parts of our house and are thinking of getting a Labrador. How do we prevent the dog from scratching the floor? Some kind of sealant? Or getting something like this - http://www.softpaws.net/ ?

1. You could have the nails removed like people do with cats, but honestly I don't recommend that

2. a good heavy coat of polyurethane and rugs where the dog sleeps frequencly will help somewhat but eventually that coating will give way

3. I've heard that some dogs try to chew off their softpaws - but if you introduce them early enough in the puppy's life - who knows?

IT's good that you're thinking ahead of time how best to live with your new companion as many owners don't do their research and end up unhappy (with similarly miserable pets)

Soft paws are used on cats to prevent damage to upholstered furniture or carpeting. I have never heard of their use with dogs.
Nail trimming is essential for cats in a home.

It is routine maintainance for dogs too. Some of your dog's exercise should be on sidewalks and hard surfaces that will naturally keep his nails from overgrowing. Exercising with your dog is essential for its mental health and physical well-being. Expect to take off a few pounds yourself if this is your first dog. One of the many benefits of having these delightful creatures in your life.

I was going to suggest soft paws. They only stay on about 6 weeks so learn how to put them on yourself. You can also use a dremel and file his nails. I file my dogs because he's a therapy dog and I don't want him to accidently scratch old people. (he's the one in the pic) Polyurethane in about 4 coats will protect the floor but it's a clear coat and you will most likely be able to see the marks in it.

You do not get the over grown big dog because if you do, you will be mad at it for jacking up your floor. Pets are just as destructive as kids. Do the dog a favor and do not get it.

either don't get a dog or take all the hardwood floorings off.

Keep the dogs nails trimmed. Good for your floor and good for the dog.

I don't think their nails would scratch the hardwood flooring.
